"I had a dream that we bought a 1980s Lancia..."

I have bad dreams - horrible sometimes. Shall I blerf them here?

A very nice mechanical engineer at Oak Ridge Nat Lab was totally silly for Lancias - few other cars make Fiats seem car-like.

Yes all this plus PriusChat being bombed by nonsense-Chinese posts clearly indicates that Matrix seams are a-rippin'. We need not even invoke p45's flippin'

Food, I say. Food is our last refuge.

Please do. Just not the erotic ones.

My Dad had a Lancia Beta.

He bought it when it was two years old. By the time it was three years old, the tops of the front wings had rusted through so completely that, if you were tall, you could see the front wheels from the driving seat. (If you were small, you could see them through the footwell if you lifted the carpet.)

    Which nonsense-Chinese posts? I'm intrigued.

We tend to call them front fenders.

There has been a lot of Chinese SPAM postings hitting the site for the last few days. It keeps the moderators bust deleting new accounts & their posts.

I knew there'd be an American word for them, but I couldn't remember what it was.

I hadn't noticed the spam postings: the mods must be doing an excellent job.

I learned that it helps to have something that can create higher vacuum for flavor penetration when sealing the pouch. My foodsaver method was just OK, but better than the no-vacuum put-it-under-water-and-push-the-air-out method. Also, having a decent thermal immersion circulator helps rather than just a warm water bath (for better temperature control). One day I'll shell out for the PolyScience, but it's hard to justify since I don't use it much.

Sometimes you can get a reservation at Alinea in short order if you put your name on a waitlist for people who cancel. It only took me a few weeks to get a reservation (this was pre-renovation, though they had already received their Michelin stars at that point). I have the cookbook, but the recipes are pretty hard to prep since you need the specialized equipment (I mean: I don't even think I can rent an anti-griddle). You can do sphereification with sodium alginate at home super-easily though.

I agree federal oversight should have been from the beginning, but our government is dysfunctional. Some in it even want to privatize air traffic control.

Public-private partnerships aren't such a wonderful idea, especially when it comes to building and maintaining new roads.

Privatizing air traffic control might not be a wonderful idea, either.

That's what's happened to the British and their railway system.

Well, no. Margaret Thatcher decided competition was essential, and that was why she privatised it. And it worked brilliantly.

Now, if I am unhappy about the price or service provided by a railway company I can instead vote with my feet, as can happen in any competitive market, and take my custom elsewhere.

For example, if Northern Rail's service between Blackpool and Leeds is expensive, unreliable or slow, I can say "Well, Northern Rail, I am going to a competitor. In future, instead of travelling from Blackpool to Leeds on your service, I shall travel from Norwich to Ipswich on Greater Anglia! It offers much better value for money."

(Blackpool to Leeds is red; Norwich to Ipswich is purple.)

    Hooray for the free market!

Interesting, since a few days ago, I just watched a series regarding all the British railway problems on The Newshour, with conclusions that they were hoping for a return to government control. Privatizing inevitably leads to priortizing of profit over service, which is why the experts interviewed, stated the government needs to step in.

Despite Uber's hiring and firing Anthony Lewandowski, their autonomous vehicle program seems to have not been well thought out. They tried to buy expertise to catch up, but got caught out.
