How long are Gen IIs lasting?

My 2004 was still running fine at 288k miles and 12 years (with a rebuilt HV battery at 195k miles) when I traded it in for my 2016 Prius 3

I honestly have no idea but am in the exact same position you are. My 06 hit 200,000km last week, needs new all season tires and is still on the original battery so i'm confident i'm on borrowed time with it. Looking at either trading it in for something newer or just accept the replacements needed "soon".

 

I have 2006 still running 240K but ABS Actuator will likely to end my ownership. I say ABS Actuator will kill many Prii in market unless there is a cheaper solution available soon.

 

The old family prius has 310k miles and still has original struts, and replaced battery at 240k miles. The old battery nenver even failed, I replaced it with a newer 07 battery for fun. Amazing car! Everything works

 

My son has my 2004. It has about 280,000 miles on it and still runs great. A/C quite though and he didn't get it fixed.

 

generally 10-15 years, and 150-200,000 miles.

 

My 2005 has 283K on it, original HV battery. It is my daily driver. This thing is a Timex watch (wow OLD reference). I am debating whether to get a new HV battery or get a whole other lower mileage Gen 2 Prius.

 

The main killers of the cars is usually the hybrid batteries. What seems to be true on the forums is battery failures start around 12 years and pretty much all batteries are dead after 18. This is why you see almost no first gens around anymore, only the occasional 03. So likely we'll see gen 2s on the road until the late 2020s.

 

My fleet of 04 to 08 have 148K, 228K, 293K, 303K, 331K, 375K.

These cars will last as long as someone takes care of them. The engines get pretty worn out at 400 to 500K. +1 on the brake actuator repair. That's going to be an expensive repair that will send may to the junk yard. Accidents take their toll also. Batteries don't have to be that expensive to keep going.

Geez even 3 of 4 of my TPMS are still good approaching 12 years.
Just came over the mountains to Pittsburgh, and it is duck soup for the battery in winter with heat on inside the car.

Summer more challenging with A/C on, then I get worried about the batt performance when it drops into the purple up a big mountainside. But I think in the cooler winter climates we get a good 6 months easy life for the battery.

 

there aren't any statistics, so it's hard to say. certainly, we have examples of 2,3,4,500,000 miles, but we also have examples of 10-12 years old with a needed $2-3,000. repair that sends the owner packing.
most anything will last as long as you want to keep pouring money into it.

 

Mines a 2005 120k miles and it's dead, P Lock problem..

 

that's the problem determining life span.

 

@strawbrad Hi Brad, also in Minnesota. You have 6 Prii? What do you think of the gen 3 Prius? Is it as robust as the second gen model in terms of longevity?

Why do you think the engine gets worn out at 400-500k? I would think that the hybrid system allows for longer use of the gas motor.

 

I was just noticing today that the Gen 2s here in Tennessee are starting to look rough. Dented, faded, scratched ect. It makes me sad honestly. These were such high tech nice cars when they were new. I guess its hard to believe the gen 2 has been on the road for over 14 years now.

 

The more miles you put on them, the longer they seem to last. Assuming of course, basic maintenance is provided and anything that requires attention gets it.

HV batteries HATE sitting unused.
