Used Primes

what is a plus/premium/advanced? there is a uge price difference.

let's say it is a plus. you buy it in the northeast for 21k, then get 6k in tax benefits. turn around and sell it after a year of driving for $22,800. you could make a nice living.

 

I’ve already seen about a half dozen on Craigslist out here.

One had 32 k miles.

 

Only the original purchaser of a new vehicle can get the tax benefits. It's a one-time thing per car.
In Mass, there is also something about the state incentive requiring the vehicle to be owned and registered for three years. It wasn't clear what happened if you sold it before the end of the three-year period but it sounded like they could ask for the $1500 back.

correct, sorry if i wasn't clear. the point is, the above car appears to be a ripoff, looking for an unsuspecting sucker who thinks he has to pay 30k for a prime.

 

Based on the pictures, the car in the OP's link is Advanced model. For 15,425 mile 1 year old Prime Advanced, this is probably a right price. Though, since I live in NE, I would take $4500 cash back and $4500 tax credit and get a brand new 2017 Prime advanced for fairly close to this price at least until April 2nd.

 

advanced in new england: 34k less dealer discount, 31k less rebate, $26,500., less tax credit: $22k

and $1,500. in ma = $21,500.

 

Turns out the dealer in the OP's link is in CT. I doubt anyone would buy this at this price.

 

It can also make a difference depending on state tax rebates. No such luck here in MN...we only get the federal rebate ( last I checked anyways ).

OK, so if you live in CT and can't get the MA rebate, it looks more like $23K new but how does $22,853 make any sense for a used car with over 15K miles? My only thinking was you would be trying to sell it to some unsuspecting person who thought they would also get the tax credits...

 

This car is starting to sound less about green, more about greenbacks...

Well, if the OP's link is any indication. $34K MSRP has depreciated to $22K in less than a year. I would think the trade-in value for this 2017 Prime was less than $20K already. That's sad.

 

Who in their right mind would sell a Prime this soon? The car just came out in 2017.

 

again, depends on which model. if it is an advanced, and you live in a state with no rebate, and you don't earn enough to get the fed $4,500., then you're probably looking at around 26-27k. so yes, in that case, not a bad deal.

 

Depreciation is a function of what you can buy something else for. Right now, if I can pick up a new prime advanced for $21.5K, I'm not going to buy a used one for more than the mid-teens. You can argue whether it's depreciation or not but the car in the OP has a value to me of less than half of MSRP at this point. Strip away the credits and tax advantages of a new car and bingo, that car has a much greater value. Trailer it to Florida and it also may have significantly more value.

Depreciation is not just a percentage thing based on time and mileage...It's a market value thing and markets vary.

 

Saw a used (11k/mi) for sale at Carmax Laurel, MD about a month ago. Listed at 27k$. It is already sold.
