The flip side to corporations counting costs are the consumers unwilling to pay for advances. The Pinto prototypes had a gas tank liner that would have prevented the leaks, and other safety features, including a driver airbag. Market research at the time showed that people, while they say the want safer cars, were unwilling to pay for it. A couple polls have been posted here showing people want more efficient cars, yet it doesn't show up in hybrid sales.

Nimrod was, and the term was used to describe a great hunter; it has since the '30s been used particularly in America, to describe a dim-witted person. Bugs Bunny called Elmer Fudd a nimrod.

LOL! The RAF one, (RAF will be 100 years old tomorrow) didn't need to pull up at the pumps; the pumps came out to it! Range/endurance was really magnificent, but more of a gas guzzler than Toyota's.

Don't laugh, I used to work a short time with a guy whos first name was Nimrod, and he lived up to it. He was warned many a time that he had to take a drug test and he still failed.

    "We are all the testers"
I disagree with that premise. This is the American attitude toward new products. When I sold motorhomes, our last comment to the client was, "you will find problems with this NEW RV, just make a list, and we'll fix them for you."
I remember the calls we would get like the 70 year old man, on Baker grade who had just blown the transmission on his brand new RV. These types of problems were common.
This has always seemed to be outrageous to me and is one reason I hated that part of the business. The RV manufacturers are very sloppy people, and the problems that occur are to be discovered/fixed by the client?! This is why America has slipped in vehicle sales. When Japanese manufacturers like Toyota can come out with a brand new product like the Prime, which has virtually no problems, this standard puts American manufacturing to shame. Testing should be performed BEFORE the sale, by proper engineers; bean counters should have input, but NOT the final say. Now they're trying to throw autonomy into this complex witch's cauldron, without PROPER, CONTROLLED testing! Arrrgh!!!

For a second there, I thought would were referring to Microsoft software. They always sell their beta software but never a final, stable product.

in a case like this, it could turn out that some blame the victim. personally, i would never let a car drive itself without me being on top of things. but then, how easy is it to relax and start to believe these systems are perfect?
no, i'll stick with proven technology until these things are bulletproof.
