    THANKS for the feedback.

Would love to from anyone who knows if ETC can communicate with a "FasTrak" in the glovebox or similar location!

27th June: Got My car in the night.
30th June: Got the plates from dealer. (She did a walk in registration in DMV on that day)
3rd July: Got my Fast-Track Transponder (you need that for bay area counties only). Walked into their SF office and was done in 10 minutes.
3rd July: Mailed the form to DMV.
17th July: DMV issued the sticker. (Date on the envelope)
    20th July: Got stickers home (# 673XX)
that is 3 weeks and 2 day (with one public holiday in there)
    Godd experience so far.

Got mine today: 6708X. MBPR is a couple of hundred higher than me so it looks like they are moving briskly.

Update 2: I went to the DMV yesterday and got my license plate #. I had to argue a little with the girl at the counter because she didn't want to give it to me, she kept telling me to send in my application with my VIN. I kept telling her I'd already done that, but they sent the application back to me. Finally, she went in the database and gave me the plate number, but warned me that I shouldn't send in my application until the plates arrive in case they get lost in the mail and I have to be reassigned a new plate number. I went ahead and sent in the revised application anyways--I hope the 2nd time is a charm! :)

DMV received my application for HOV stickers on 07/10/2006. They were mailed to me on 7/19/2006. Eight (8) business days total turn around time. Thats awesome!!!! I mailed them on 7/7/2006 priority mail and gave a money order for the 8 dollar fee. Not sure if that helped, but issue date of 7/19/2006 is quick, I wish USPS was the same. I received them today in S. California. Bought car 06/30/2006 evening, license plates were received on the 7th as well. Very excited!!!!! JW

    May 19th: Bought 2006 Prius package 8
June 26th: Got License plate number by calling dealer

July 10th: Mailed form to DMV (regular first class)
    July 18th: Check clears bank
July 19th: Sticker issues (date of issue on certificate)
July 20th: DMV mails sticker (post mark on envelope)
    July 24th: Received stickers - 677xx

    Long version:
Decided to buy the Prius in early May. Called South Bay dealers and found that the wait was 10 to 16 weeks.
Called dealers farther away and found that Santa Rosa had a Red Package 8 coming shortly, and put my name down for it.
Car arrived on 17th May. Drove up and picked up the car on 19th May.
Dealer took 2+ weeks to file the registration, DMV took 2+ weeks to process it.
Kept calling the dealer periodically, and got the license plate number on June 26th.
Got the FastTrak transponder and mailed the app the same day (June 26th.)
USPS returned the app to me, since I hadn't completed the address properly (Oops!)
Sent in the app again to DMV on July 10th; double checked the address this time!

Looks like they are doing around 900 a week. Applying within the next few weeks should be OK.

July 19: stickers issued (per the certificate)
July 20: stickers mailed (per postmark)
    July 24: stickers arrived, 678xx

I was going to buy a house, and that fell through so now I'm thinking I want to jump on a hybrid purchase for the sticker.

So get this - my husband was calling around to dealerships: One dealer said they're not even issuing stickers anymore. Another said they'll be issuing indefinitely. Seems the consensus here is there is 75,000 and end of story after that, eh? Anyone know why dealers would say such radically conflicting things? And - not to doubt the wonderful hive mind that is a community of educated individuals - but how has the 75,000 number been verified? Sorry if this is obvious, but I am not sure what to believe and this is a LONG thread!!

Thanks in advance and best regards,
    betty ray

75K is the limit set by CA bill AB 2628.
    http://democrats.assembly.ca.gov/members/a41/a41hybrids.htm
Actually, the Dept. of transportation is supposed to perform a review of the impact on traffic in HoV lanes,
after the 50K mark was hit (which happened earlier this year).
My guess is that the 75K mark will be hit Aug/Sept, before the review is even complete; so the review shoud be moot.

You had better hurry if you are counting on getting the sticker.
It is a race against time, and it depends mainly on how quickly you can get your car,
and more importantly if the dealer can expedite the new car registration with DMV, either by "walking" your registration to local DMV office or by filing electronically. If you can get your license plate number and submit your application to DMV within the next 3 weeks, you should have a good chance of getting the stickers.

    7/12 received my license plates
    7/13 mailed my HOV application
7/24 personal check cleared my bank
    7/25 clean air stickers issued
    7/26 mailed from DMV
    7/28 received number 684nn

That looks like 7 business days turnaround. Not bad!

Incidentally, there was a newspaper article a couple weeks ago quoting a DMV official saying there were fewer than 5000 stickers remaining. I don't see how that agrees with my issued number above, if there are 75000 total.

    :) does a happy dance :D

I just got a Prius yesterday (by chance, called up and there it was...fate!). I just moved to CA and don't even have a CA drivers license yet. I know I need to go get that taken care of, how long would it take to transfer a MD license to a CA license...is it an on the spot thing?

How long does it take to get this Fasttrak thing so that I can apply for the stickers (and is it actually necessary)? These stickers would -really- help my morning commute!

    Thanks for the help!

My FasTrak took a couple of days. Print the app from https://www.bayareafastrak.org/static/forms...application.pdf , ensure you enclose paperwork that proves you have a Hybrid (I sent a copy of my sales contract), and prepare to skip through the toll booths. I didn't even have my plates and they still issued the device. I did write the word HYBRID next to the "Please send me __ transponders."

As for a CA license, you need to take the written drivers test within 10 days of becoming a resident or getting a job. Make an appointment unless you love killing time: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/dl/dl_info.htm#2500

6/29 dealer sends paperwork to dmv
7/12 got plate # over phone from dmv, sent app + cashier's check
    7/25 stickers mailed from dmv
    7/27 received stickers, #674xx

doesn't appear the cashier's check expedited the process
