There are two 2015 Prius Two's for sale at a local dealership and I'm looking to purchase my first used Prius. The two options are a Nautical Blue one priced at $16,500 with 41,700 miles on it. The other is a Winter Gray Metallic one priced at $19,000 with 20,325 on it. Both are certified.

Ideally I would like to pay around $17-17,500, at most, for a vehicle right now. Should I try to work them down on the Winter Gray one? Or does 20k miles really not make that much of a difference (both are well maintained according to CarFax).

Well according to Kelly Blue Book The fair price for the one with 41,700 mi. is $16800 and the other is $18100. So the higher mileage one is priced better but now all these dealers add dealer fees ect. Best thing is to talk to sales manager on the phone and see who gives you the best price out the door. Price for car plus tax and tags. Tell them you don't pay dealer fees. If they insist on dealer fee tell them then they have to lower car price buy that amount. All you care about is car price plus tax and tags. Let them know your ready to come down and buy it today to get the best price. They don't want to fool around with you if they don't think your serious especially on the phone. But if their smart they'll give you the best price to get you to come in. I sold lots of cars over the phone when I sold cars eons ago.

How many miles do you anticipate driving each year? Or is it unknown?

With limited info, I'd get the higher mileage Prius because I don't like paying over fair price. And 20k is very low in terms of difference in miles.

Plus, there is a difference between being lightly driven on a daily basis and long periods of non use. If the lower mileage Prius was the latter, then that is not good for the traction battery.

To me that mileage is a wash. If it’s between those two get the higher miles one.

    Thanks for all the input.

It's kind of an unknown as to how many miles I'll drive per year. I don't drive very far now, and just accepted a position closer to my apartment, so commute wise I don't have far at all (less than 10 round trip). I do drive more on weekends and make frequent trips to visit my folks 30 minutes away, etc. I also anticipate buying a home in a year or so, and that will almost certainly put me further away from work.

From their online listings, both look to have the same packages. I think the only thing the low miles one may have that the high mile one doesn't is the cargo cover, which is a non-factor.

Buying a home is one of the biggest investment a person will invest in. If your current vehicle is reliable meaning doesn't bre/ak down on a "regula/r basis" and don't need any MAJOR repairs soon, and your commute ain't that fa/r, I won't move up on ca/r yet. Instead, continue to save up for the home down payment to avoid private monthly insurance (PMI). Once you buy the house, then you'll know how much to move up on a ca/r.

But if your money is not a factor, I'd take the lower mileage. If I was in your shoes, I'd take the lower priced one. 20,000 miles more won't make much difference mileage wise, but the few grand in cash saved does. But do shop around for equivant priced prius w/same yea/r and miles to "bend" prices down. I shopped for a prius for 6 months, they didn't budge on price until I brought "proof" of lowered priced prius nea/r by.

Yeah, the first paragraph is kind of my dilemma. I have a 2006 Acura TSX with 162,000 miles on it. It has been reliable aside from me having to get four new tires within the past year and a half due to being unlucky and two of them due to beading failing.

That said, it does have 162,000 miles on it. I know that's nothing for a vehicle, especially not one like an Acura, but I do feel like I'd be taking a bit of a gamble hanging onto it a few more years, and I would like to at least get something out of it via trade in.

Money is a factor, but I did receive a little inheritance when my grandpa passed in November, so I could use a bit of that on a pretty good car down payment.

Interesting. I'm sure location plays a role in pricing somehow?

I know that it's relatively difficult to find used Prius' around here, so I'm guessing they're pretty in demand. Not sure how much that plays into pricing. I feel like I may just pass on the one that's $19,000 and see if I can haggle on the $16,500 one, maybe get it down by another $1,000 or something. I think that'd be smarter financially for me.

I should note that there is another dealer in town (non-Toyota dealer) that has a 2015 Prius Two with like 11,200 miles on it for $17,850, but that seems a bit odd to me, and that car was purchased from an auction.

Oh, you already have a car? Then you have the option of waiting for a killer deal. If it were me, I'd also consider waiting until after you purchase your home.

Based on what I have seen, some of the better deals for Prii seem to be in the northern Great Lakes area, if you're patient. California has a lot of Prii, but they seem priced higher, possibly because of the extended CARB warranty on the traction battery.

I noticed Prius, and other cars, goes down in price if not sold in 3 months by the grand. So I agree with wait for killer deal, that's what I did for 6 months.

i would buy the one with more miles and use the difference in price money for possible repairs
