    So "we" are not the only family to think so eh? Seems like they richly deserve the crappy reputation they have.

    I'll say this, the Honda and VW dealers in the east metro were all FANTASTIC to work with, just did not have the vehicle we decided on.

    Received word this afternoon from the service tech at Sterling McCall. All is done and the car is ready to pick up. Cavender footed the entire bill, including the HV battery and its ancillaries, the 12V battery, water pump and belt, car rental, towing and the extended warranty $50.00 copay. We didn't need to pay anything. I highly recommend Cavender to anyone who happens to be in the central-south Texas area.

    One point of concern, but I didn't want to belabor it with Sterling McCall: the tech verified the HV battery is brand spanking new with zero miles and the correct part number, not a remanufactured battery, but the Sterling McCall dealership said the warranty is 1 year, regardless of over-the-clunker pickup or dealer installation, with the same unlimited mileage warranty. I'll take it up with Toyota of North America. Cavender and Sterling McCall have been brilliant.

    there's a lot of confusion over the warranty, even among dealers.

    yes and no, most people with common sense will not invest 2 or $3000 in a 10 year old car that might be worth 4500 retail.. gen 2's are the older style no one really wants and with the bad brake actuators costing another 3 grand they are money pits.. you will never save enough in gas to justify the upkeep on an old hybrid (when the dealer replaced my actuator for free last summer I asked the cost, they said $3200..I asked what the car is worth trade in they said $2800) would have been cheaper for them to buy it back and crush it

    ROFLMAO! Really????

    THE question is: What can you buy that is as good as or better than what you have (Gen2) for the cost of the needed repairs? Answer - Not much. Sure, some vehicles, no matter the brand or model insist on frequent repairs, with the Prius, Camry and Corolla, that would be the rare exception not the rule as with most others.

    @ericbecky helped another dealer "see the light" on the warranty. It may be worth it to call r message him so he can work his magic to enlighten the dealer.

    As long as he gets a Toyota dealer receipt for the repair, if anything were to happen, that will get him 3 years.

    But I doubt he'll need to bother with it

    I guess I'm not like most people, or perhaps I was standing behind the door when they were distributing the common sense ration, but I'm happy and so is my daughter, and the car looks and drives like new, apart from that pesky battery, which is no longer a problem. Would I do it again? After learning much more about the Prius experience from this forum, probably not, but when one is ignorant, luck and a good dealership both help.

    Call Toyota North America. Get someone there to verify that your warranty is for 3 years. The call will be documented with your name, etc... But like mentioned above, it likely won't ever be an issue.

    no the question is when to stop pouring money into a 10 year old car. everything is nearing the end of its useful life. the answer is when the repairs exceed its value.. and a 10 year old prius isn't worth much more then 3 grand in good running condition.. so when your battery dies or the cvt blows or the brakes go out your telling me you would spend the money to fix it and hope nothing else expensive breaks... again that just being foolish.. its just a car that drops in value every day.. I am not sure why people think these cars are magic and should last for ever.. but to each their own, its just a machine, when it get to expensive to keep alive you junk it and get something else..

    Really? Says who? Last I counted, our car was 13 years old, 30% PAST your useful life assumption.

    No, it is not knowing how to perform a real financial analysis that is foolish, just say'n.

    Um, you obviously do not know much, if anything about depreciation. The average NEW car loses about $6k of value in the first 60 DAYS of ownership. You can fix a TON of stuff for that kind of money and prudent people do.

    Um, not sure where you get that idea, but if you think so.

    you are not the only one living debt free, I have not had debt since I was 36, I have 3 rental properties all paid off..life time income ..BFD
    its not hard to do if you have common sense and don't waste money on old cars as mentioned above ;)

    keep living the dream, I know I do.

    My daughter visited overnight from Houston and I reviewed the Sterling McCall invoice. The part number for the HV battery confirms it's a new, not remanufactured, battery. The display shows battery status as nearly full/blue or full/green. I took the car on a 30-mile drive, freeway and rush hour city, and it performs well IMO. But upon her return to Houston, my daughter complained that the fuel economy on the round trip was about 40 mpg vs nearly 50 mpg on an earlier RT. She also noted the acceleration was sluggish. Everything being equal, other than the new battery, I don't have a clue why the fuel economy would decrease by 20%.

    Her text to me: "I reset the trip odometer, and it has gives an active display for every 10 minutes of driving. The average was 40.1 mpg for the entire trip. Which is less than it was before the new hybrid battery. Acceleration is sluggish. I have to press harder and longer on the gas pedal in order to get up to highway speeds."

    have her run a couple tankfuls and calculate at the pump. these things can make your imagination run wild. if it was sluggish, wouldn't you have noticed?

    That's why I noted it seemed fine to me. And I asked her if she calculated the fuel use at the pump. Of course she hadn't. I told her to do what you suggested and then let me know.

    It's just the driver. My 06 gets in the 30's when my son drives while I get mid-40's hwy and 50's in town. Also, probably don't have to tell you but Houston traffic is not conducive to good fuel economy! :whistle: Another fun fact: driving towards the Texas coast is almost always into a stiff headwind so FE suffers.

    Another thing: have her check tire pressures as dealers are notorious for setting them too low.
