Does anyone know if the Apple Watch 3 series can be charged on the Qi charging pad in the Prius Prime?

Would it hurt to give it a try? I had tried iPhone X it works but very slow. I still prefer cable :)

I don't have the watch yet. I just ordered it. I figured it would charge on the Qi but BF doesn't think it will. I was hoping someone may have tried it already.

I have the original Apple Watch and just tried charging it on the Qi pad. No luck. (My iPhone X does charge.)

I'm surprised that it won't work. I have the Series 2 watch and an iPhone 8 Plus but no Qi charger. However, Apple is about to start selling (for an insane price) a wireless charger that will charge the phone, the watch, and the ear buds (if in Apple's new case) all at once. But I guess it has to be a Series 3 watch. I didn't see what technology it's using other than that it's obviously inductive. Agreed- Once I got my watch and tried to charge it in the car, it didn't work. Bummer.

I've read that the Apple Watch charger does work with non-Apple Qi watches, but only chargers labeled compatible with the Apple Watch will charge the Watch.

I've got a Series 0 Apple Watch and am waiting for some new features before upgrading. Sorry to read about lack of charge. Though in reality I'll probably always prioritize my iPhone on the charger while using it for music, etc.

Leave it to Apple to make a proprietary tweak to a standard so you have to buy THEIR accessories. They have enough market share so they can do this. A few years ago, the EU declared that all cell phones sold in the EU must support microUSB charging. Apple successfully told them to take a hike.

To be fair, my iPhone 8 charges fine on the Prius Qi charger, so they did not impose anything special on the phone. It could be that they're doing something non-standard on the Watch either because of limited space or to be backwards compatible with the original charger in a limited space. (Not to mention there were a couple of standards -- of which Qi was the most popular -- and Apple's decision to support it basically ended the war.)

And microUSB is a monstrosity. Non-symmetrical connectors were invented back in the 1970's -- when no one could afford to have any intelligence in the port -- and the USB standard took the stupid idea 30+ years later and just shrunk it down. Even USB finally changed their tune with USB C.

They could have said that the watch uses some other, perhaps proprietary, wireless charging standard, and that would be fine. What bothers me is that they say it uses Qi, but only their version of Qi.

I was not commenting on the relative merits of MicroUSB. I was only commenting that Apple has enough market power to tell government regulatory agencies to buzz off. And get away with it.

I'm pretty sure that Apple never did this, it is everyone else reviewing/discussing their products that says it uses Qi. Apple says it is proprietary as far as I can see. Is there some evidence to the contrary? Thanks.
