Is it the head gasket?

I know the head gasket leak is a common issue for the 2010 Prius nearing 200K miles. I have had very bad misfires on cold starts for the last few weeks. If you've read my other posts you may know I put a liquid head gasket seal in the coolant and the startup problem went away for a couple months. Now it's back.

However, this seems very strange. I can turn the car on and put it in neutral right away before the gas engine kicks in, doing this somehow tells the car to not turn the gas engine on, and once I put it in any gear the gas engine will turn on. Then if I put it in drive the misfire is not too bad but still noticeable. If I just turn the car on and leave it in park, the misfire is the worst thing I've ever heard, sounds like marbles stuck in the cylinder.

Does this mean something is wrong with the tranny too? Or when the car is in gear does it help to clear out the cylinder/valve in someway?

Either way, I did order a new head gasket and bolt set. Any thing else I need to replace at the same time? I do plan to clean out the EGR too.

    Thanks,
    Ryan

I was going to do the headgasket until the blew a hole on the side of the engine so just don't recommend the head gasket.probably would replace the engine.

I second this. Then also do the Oil Catch Can mod. But first, let's diagnose for a minute:

Do you have a check engine light? If you do, read the codes and research on them.

Have you ever replaced the EGR or Cleaned it? If you haven't I would suggest cleaning it right away. If there aren't any codes about the EGR a quick way to see if that is the problem and it needs replaced is to simply unplug it for operation and see if your problem goes away. This will throw a code and it will take more than one startup to determine if it is this.

My HG was going but I wasn't losing an ounce of coolant. Engine getting replaced right now. Should be done Monday.

All that bad head gaskets, surely everyone is complaining to Toyota right? Not quietly repairing them

The more I hear about these HG issues, the more I appreciate my 2007.

Same! My 2010 head gasket just blew at 350,000 miles. I’m bummed as I have to sell my Prius as is. However I’m still grateful for my trusty 2005 Prius that is built like a tank!

I have a 2010 GEN 3 Prius and the head gasket blew. What happened is I was driving it normally and I was going to get the battery worked on. Just so happens that when I went to drop it off I got the amber warning light that it was hot. I shut it off immediately. When I drove the car a few days later it drove for a few minutes and then the light came on again. I checked the fluid and it was low. I added some fluid, let it cool and it drove for about 15 minutes then got hot again. The fluid was lower but I wasn’t seeing smoke in the exhaust. (Turns out it was bubbling out). I ended up driving it home and had to stop 2-3 times and wait about 1/2 hour each. I only was about 10 miles away. I borrowed my buddy’s diagnostic tool and started it and monitored the temperature. It slowly was rising, so I thought it might be the thermostat or water pump. So I replaced the thermostat, but it didn’t fix it. So I decided to take it to the dealer to see if it was the water pump before I spent $400 for a part I didn’t need. Also, I was doing research on the site here and I read a lot about people having a lot of trouble with head-gaskets blowing on the GEN 3. I also read that people were having problems with oil going really low with no warning light or throwing a code. So, to be sure, I checked the oil in the car and it was over 2 quarts low. It didn’t even register on the dipstick! The car never gave a warning or code! So I filed the oil, brought it to the dealer, and they told me it was the head gasket. Has anyone else have the issue with the low oil and no warning? Also, has there been an over abundance with head gasket going? Thanx for the help and info.

    Welcome to Prius Chat (y).

    Some questions:
    • How many miles on your Prius?
    • How long have you owned your Prius?
    • How often do you check the oil level?
    • Where is the coolant bubbling out from?
    • Have you looked into the egr circuit to see if it is clogged?
If you replaced the thermostat, the engine water pump is just on the other side of the block of it. Usually do them in pairs for that reason. I’ve done the engine water replacement and when I pulled out 2010’s around 175 k miles, it was still functioning, but there was some resistance.

Good luck and keep us posted (y).
