"Pulse and Glide" Survey

    I can't give a single number percentage, because it varies so much with terrain, traffic, etc. I coast with the HSI in or near its zero point as much as practical on downhills and approaching stops. Not much in level areas, and never on uphills, even slight ones.

    I found, at speed 89kmh, best is steady driving giving 3.3l/100km like all the time. Anything below this speed gives me less mpg, because this speed is ICE sweet spot. Drive 70km or so and mpg will decrease. We both discover this. BUT, There is some treshold for trips with lower speeds, let say 40-50kmh. Here steady driving is not giving satisfiyng results as ICE hate this speeds. So P&G,... accelerating slowly, bar to the end of eco label at hsi lets say, is all right for pulsing and than glide as much as possible with as little as possible battery using. This gives me 2.8l/100km with fully battery charged at the end if drive, so with depleting it, it will be like 2.6... I think, steady driving with cruise at speeds 70kmh +. And pulse and glide for speeds around 50kmh is giving me best mpg. That is on 17" tyres...

    Your observation conflicts with others who found best MPG in between 10 and 20 mph (15 - 30 kmh). Here is one:

    Hi Fuzzi, thanks, I saw this several times. And I also proved/tested by myself that lower speeds = more MPG. That is why I splitted MPG for 2 areas. One was for speeds over 70kmh and one driving below this speeds. Sometimes drivers can not drive so slow or need to keep with line, so they should find helpfull, where is good spot for high mpg at higher speeds where they need ICE running /over 75kmh/. My advices apply for 17", where speeds for example like 70kmh yields more consumption than 89kmh, because battery can not keep car running from battery at 70 nearly never, therefore running ice most of the time and not at optimal consumption.

    I try keep it below the power bar when Pulsing (unless I'm going up a slope).

    Most of my driving is on congested city roads I accelerate for just a few seconds ( 3-4 sec.) so that the ICE kicks in and then go back to EV when I lift my foot from the paddle, this gives me a better mileage on city roads, I wanted to know if these repeated very brief start/stop of ICE would damage my car in any way? Could someone with technical expertise or some Prius C user who has been doing likewise for considerable time please answer.

    its been 2 years since this post, could you please share what kind of mileage do you get driving on city roads with repeated stop n go at short intervals?

    I have usually gotten on my work commute (about 17 miles each way, stop and go) around 48 mpg in winter and up to 53 in summer. These are calculated values (the computer shows more like 50 and 56).

    I have been off of work for a couple weeks with our new baby so have only done some short trips. Has definitely hurt MPG with the computer showing more like 48 on this tank.
