Do they not teach about what happened during WW2 in Germany?

Source: German Environment Agency study finds NO2 concentrations have serious impact on health - Green Car Congress

Outdoor air concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in Germany have a serious impact on health, according to a new study published by the German Environment Agency (Umwelt Bundesamt, UBA). (The study was carried out on behalf of UBA by the Helmholtz Zentrum München and IVU Umwelt.) Statistics for 2014 indicate roughly 6,000 premature deaths due to cardiovascular diseases which are linked to background concentrations of NO2 in both rural and urban areas.

Maybe that's why the monkey experiments, trying to prove otherwise. Too bad they didn't use their own board members for the experiments. Or maybe they did, & that's why their new, "diesel aint so bad after all" actions seem so brain dead.

News brought by the people who wrote the code that VW used to cheat:
Breakthrough: new Bosch diesel technology provides solution to NOx problem - Bosch Media Service

Bosch CEO Denner also calls for transparency on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions
    • Unprecedented emissions: NOx 10 times lower than limits set for 2020
    • New Bosch technology retains advantage with regard to fuel consumption and environmental impact
    • Denner: “There’s a future for diesel. Soon, emissions will no longer be an issue.”
    • Internal combustion engines equipped with artificial intelligence have almost zero impact on air quality
    • Appeal to politicians: fuel consumption should be measured on the road and emissions analyzed from well to wheel
Near as I can tell, the cheat software was written about 2006. So 12 years later they finally cracked the code?

It's a statement that sounds of desperation.
Bosch is claiming cleaner emissions without SCR.
Like HCCI, I need it tested before I can believe it. But perhaps improved computing power and engine control has made it possible.

They're claiming it with SCR, actually.
    This.

It seems that the philosophy basically boils down to... get the emissions control systems nice and hot, quickly, and then once they're hot, keep them hot by either restricting exhaust flow at low load, or shutting the engine off entirely. That in itself makes sense - after all, Toyota hybrids have been doing at least the last part, and probably some of the first part, since 1997.

If it works (which is a huge if), my next concern is reliability - "blowtorch modes" when they're working are great at burning up turbochargers and cracking catalyst matrices with thermal shock. (Just ask anyone with a 2012-2014 Passat before the 23O6 campaign (the one that made it cheat more, but they told the EPA that it fixed the irregularities), who had to replace multiple turbochargers if they had to actually use the engine power soon after startup.)

And about PM control, namely DPFs, which many (!) owners have illegally tampered in Europe due to the increasing problems?
Herr Denner, emissions will always be an issue, pointing on the other direction is a denial.

I'm thinking the first priority should be larger vehicles: trains, lories, and busses. I'm not objecting to smaller vehicles as much as these large, point sources are easily identified and the long term life most usefully monitored. But there is a 300,000 car problem: What Will Volkswagen Do With The 300,000+ Diesel Cars It Has Repurchased In America? | CleanTechnica

If the USA buy-back cars require an SCR catalyst, my understanding is there is no room for the additional hardware. Yet even if they were 'repaired,' fair market value, these older cars would eviscerate new car sales.

Is the specifics for this published anywhere? The current news reports make it sound like they are just controlling air flow, temperatures, and EGR. Then there was a lower cost than current methods quote that got me thinking no SCR
Aren't European petrols starting to get exhaust filters, or does DI engines still have an exception for their particle emissions?

Bosch says it has solved diesel NOx problem; as low as 13 mg NOx/km even under RDE; refining existing technologies - Green Car Congress

My guess is bosch looked closely at what mazda is doing, and added that existing technology to their diesel suite. Mazda does pass european and Japaneses emissions without SCR in their diesel, but can not pass us emissions. Mazda claims there next diesel skyactiv2-d will be able to pass US emissions, but we will have to wait to find out. bosch includes their scr in their graphic. Part of the vw cheat (now not allowed by bosch) had to do with restricting power which kept temperature in range when on the test cycle. Here they have taken more control of their variable geometry turbocharger to change boost levels, and use sensors to decide how agressive to be with egr, and how much high pressure hot exhaust gasses and how much lower pressure cooled exhaust gasses to use.

This technology makes perfect sense. The problem is something like the mercedes M256 system with a gasoline turbo charged and electrically supercharged miller cycle engine + a 48V IMA system is likely cheaper than diesel if similar power requirements are needed.

    I am of two minds:
    1. Portable test equipment - this finally gave them the tools to see what is going on.
    2. D*mn simple fix - temperature management of a chemical process. Sure the consumables go up but at least it doesn't dump the NOx load.
It does little good to grumble about what might have been. But the cheat and snark delayed the research and lab work that might have solved this problem ten years ago.

Or like a full parallel hybrid, the technology required for the proper engine control wasn't ready back then.

Which isn't an excuse to cheat. Even if available, VW might have still cheated since this still requires the use of SCR.
