The best LT mpg e figures are attained when you let the computers control the consumption. Saying that I still charge on the “To” portion downhill, so I can run in Ev uphill, on the way back. Only to encounter another 1000 ft. drop~ , then I maximize my charge and put it in Brake position, there by obtaining a charge on the glide
down and a short ICE charge when lightly touching the go pedal. The car keeps me thinking.
For any newbies, do consider the Brake position downhill. It gives max charge and max control.

During winter I always started my morning commute with HV only. I live in NE cold climate and my commute is 18 miles one way. When temp is below 14F or there is ice or snow so that I have to use front defroster, ICE comes on automatically even if you have full charge on battery and the car is set to EV mode. If ICE comes on anyway for heat, as might as use it for traction is my rational. This saves traction battery charge for the commute back home in afternoon when temperature is above 14F and I don't usually need defroster.

I used the B in my 2016 Prius when coming down from the mountains--I will try it in the Prime.

The car tells us what to do, all perfectly logical for your area and weather.

Often on these steep descents I never have to touch the brake pedal.

This morning my PRIME's "Guess-O-Meter" showed 32 miles EV range. I am increasing my current MGP day by day. That's sure sign of Spring here at North East.:ROFLMAO:

The guess-o-meter is so inaccurate I gave up and flipped it to show %charge instead.

MPG not MGP... I am now up to 1700 miles on current tank of gas with ~175mpg showing. I have two bars left on gas gauge. Next time I fill up the tank I am planning to drive my PRIME without charging for EV unitil the tank is empty to get accurate HV only mpg for my routine driving. I've done mpg calculation of HV drive before, but only for highway trips longer than 500 miles at ~70mph in a single day with average MPG of ~60MPG. That's not my representative driving habit. I am curious what kind of MPG I get for my routine commuting on my PRIME.

Good to hear, I now have hopes to hit 2000 miles on the tank. Let us know if you make 2000 miles and of your next test. You do realize that pure ICE operation is probably unobtainable, the engine comes on, like it or nor,
for its own reasons. You do not have total control. Whether the car charges by plug in or by pushing the charge button is also irrelevant to the Prius computers. Or, if climbing a big hill a bit of charge transfers to the HV pack.......It’s all MPGe, sysnergistacly speaking..................Good Luck.

Yes, I know the car starts EV mode by default, and even without any EV range left in the traction battery, there are always EV drive within HV mode just like regular Prius. On my last Gen3 Pri, my average MGI for normal commuting was 54 mpg. I think PRIME beats this number easily, but with EV charging, I have no way to know the accurate MPG. Those MPG display is totally meaningless when you combine EV drive. Weather is best to test the car with 0% climate control, so I am curious to find out how good the HV drive MPG is going to be without any charging.

I look forward to seeing your numbers. I bought mine back in Dec. and still have 3/4 tank of gas. I drive mostly EV and now pushing 3000 miles. I do love my Prime.

    >3000 miles on single tank is amazing. It is basically BEV without range anxiety.;) My daily commute is ~40 miles round trip and I can not charge at work, so I always have some ICE based run on my daily drive. During winter I was only able to drive one way on EV, but now weather is better, I can drive ~30 miles on EV. With occasional longer out of town drive, I fill tank at least every two month or shorter. My average MPG for last 14 fill-up is now 85 mpg (calculated), but this number is meaningless since amount of EV drive for each fill-up is quite variable. The EPA rating on PRIME is 55 mpg city, 53 mpg highway. On long highway drive, I was able to get ~60 mpg, so I expect city drive for my daily routine commuting to be even better than this number. It is truly an amazing car.

Try driving only in Eco for a while and watch what happens.

What happens? I have my car set on Eco mode from day one. Never played with Normal or Power mode.

Your doing fantastic. I did that at first but then had to experiment. Now I’m back to eco only.
    Thanks for the post.

I had my Gen3 set at Eco mode all the time, and got so use to very anemic pedal response. When I switched to Prime, I immediately noticed it had much quicker and powerful pedal response even at Eco mode compared to Gen3. For my daily driving, Eco mode works just fine. Only time I may switch to Normal or Power mode is when I have to drive to a big city and do many highway merging, which is rather rare occasion for me.

It helps that my commute is only 12 miles each way and I charge at home every nite. I do try to burn a little gas at the end of each month, just to run the ICE for a bit. Also, so I can keep me eco scores up, since they start over the 1st of every month.

With my commuting just long enough to have ICE come on the last 5-10 miles before reaching home, often the engine does not run long enough to complete the warm-up cycle. I was bit worried about undue strain on the engine in this situation, for this is very similar to Repeated trips of less than five miles in temperatures below 32°F / 0°C which Toyota designate it as "Special Operating Conditions". For that reason, during winter I drove my car on HV only for on a way to work 20 miles in morning. The morning temp is almost always below 32°F / 0°C where I live.
