Prius Prime - OE Tire life and other recommended tires

Should be able to get 40,000 plus.

 

I had these tires (Toyo Nanoenergy), but had a blowout and replaced them all with Michellin X-Tour A/S from Costco. After the initial 500 miles, I'm getting the same or better mileage on the Michellins and now I have confidence in my 'Supertires' (80,000 mile warrantied tires). This confidence is especially important with no spare tire. I actually think the ride is quieter too. All in all very pleased with these Michellins.

 

The stock tires are awful with wet roads and stopping along with high road nose. I trashed them and got Michelin's at about 10k miles. If I try to stop at a stop sign under normal driving conditions with a wet road, I better not slip and get traction errors. Unfortunately that's exactly what happened whenever it rained.

 

I had a flat early on (nail), but none since with the Nano tires. At 13K miles they show very little wear, so expect to get at least 40K. Haven't had much problem in the rain or snow, but I drive this car like an old fogey to maximize range and mpg, so performance is not really on my list of concerns. (This is a rather dramatic change after driving sport sedans in a 'spirited' manner all my life.)

 

YES! Get rid of those Toyo tires. Just had a bad blowout on the highway this afternoon. Waited for a Toyota Roadside Assistance for an hour. Dropped off at a dealership since that’s where that 2yr roadside assistance takes you. Of course they would. So Toyota could take charge almost double for a cheap tire. Ended up paying a bit over $100 for a Hankook Optima just to be able to get back on the road and finish my trip up north. So yes. Definitely changing these tires for some Michelin’s asap. As far as the insurance goes. They claimed the incident as a collision. Don’t know how but I may have to pay a $250 deductible but they will repair wheel well damage, rim damage and tire. So they say. Was really hoping for it to be considered comprehensive since my deductible is $0. We will see in the next couple days. Oh and they have lasted 45k miles this far.

 

So much for the repair kit...

 

My Prius PHV came with Toyo Nanoenergy (195-65 R15) I had them for around 1600 km, then switched to a new winter tyres train (Nokian). The ride with the Toyo was quiet and comfy, l had not the opportunity to test the emergency braking action on wet surfaces, but the feeling was good. However, i wanted real low rolling resistance tyres and with the springtime I have decided to go for a new set of summer tyres, Bridgestone Ecopia EP-001s, according to the Europian tyres sticker they are "A" class for both rolling resistance and braking on wet (Toyos are classified respectively "B" and "C") .
Honestly I can't say that they are much better of the Toyos the ride looks pretty much the same, maybe a less comfy since the Ecopia have stronger sides. But I am very happy about consumptions...

 

I just got the X-Tours on my 2010 Prius. I am also pleased. As far as I can tell they are identical to Michelin Defenders but $10 per tire cheaper. They are sold through Costco and Sam's club. I replace my tires before getting down to the wear bars and still got 62,000 miles out of the Michelins that I replaced.

 

Did the fix a flat work?

My Prime came with OEM Dunlop Enasave 01 A/S. It has 540 treat rating but I was not expecting to last that long. I never had good luck with OEM stock tires before, but for those tires, after 9 month 13K, they all have around 7/32" of tread left. Since the new tires started with 8/32", they used only 1/32" in 13K miles. At this rate, they may last 4 more years, but I plan to switch them when it hit 5/32" tread.

 

What is your tire pressure? Thanks.

 

Mine lasted 22,000 to 5/32, which is when I replaced them with Michelin Energy Saver A/S tires. Horrible tires when new, but they got better as they broke in. Still lost 20%-30% on rolling efficiency though.

 

Are you saying Michelin Energy Saver A/S tires had 20%-30% on rolling efficiency loss as they broke in? Or loss compared to OEM Dunlop Enasave 01 A/S?

I just switched OEM Dunlop with Xice snow. I did not use snow last winter. After 20K, OEM Dunlop Enasave 01 A/S is now with 5/32 left, So, it lost 2/32 in last 7K, or almost twice the rate compared to first 13K. Having dedicated snow now, I might be able to get another summer season from them, but I am starting to look for new set of summer tires.

 

From day one they had and still have 20-30% more rolling resistance then my OEM Dunlops. Range dropped from 28 to 22 miles.

 

Wow, that's a big loss. I was considering non LRR tire with more comfort for my next summer tires, but if one of best rated LRR tire like Michelin Energy Saver A/S is 20-30% loss compared to OEM, then non LRR tire would be even worse. Hummm, even with short tread ware, I may have to consider buying Dunlop Enasave 01 A/S again for my summer set.

 

That sounds way too much. There may be something wrong with your tires or alignment. The energy saver a/s is one of the top LRR tires out there. I switched from the energy savers to continental purecontact and lost about 10% range on my Focus Electric. If I were in the market for new tires I would get continental truecontact.
