Can I upgrade the AM/FM receiver for my Prius?

I just took delivery of my beautiful new Prius: 2006, package 6, seaside pearl with gray interior. I love it -- 48.5 mpg on the first tank of gas. :)

However, I commute 30 minutes each way and I like to listen to the local FM classical radio station. I bought the upgraded sound system, but the reception is not very good in the Prius -- lots of static :( as compared to my old '96 Camry.

Is it possible to install a better receiver in the Prius so that it still looks OK? Any recommendations as to manufacturers, models or who to have install it??

    Thanks, Blue'06 in SF

    Welcome to the group! :)

If it were me, I'd go with a Sirius or XM. They attach to your radio and will give you a selection of classical.

Thanks for your suggestion. I considered XM, but I really like a couple of our local stations (NPR and classical) and I understood that the XM radios DON'T receive the regular commercial stations. Am I wrong about that?

You are correct up to a point, but the built-in Sirius and XM merely acts like another source. When you press the button on the steering wheel, you'll cycle through AM, FM, CD and SAT (pressing the CD button cycles through CD/SAT). It doesn't replace your original radio, it just adds to it. Factory Interactive sells built-in systems for both Sirius and XM. You can also get a portable Sirius or XM radio, which will connect to your AUX input.

FWIW, Sirius has NPR on its lineup, but XM doesn't.

Just be aware that the NPR on Sirius is not the same as your local NPR station. Some of the shows are the same, but most of them are not. You can log onto NPR's website to find what the Sirius stations play, or you can follow this link. Click on the stations to get the schedules.

I end up listening to my local station during the week and the Sirius stations on the weekends.
