    Haha! Kinda like “Simon says”!

I presume you’re speaking partly tongue-in-cheek and partly seriously here, but one thing eye tracking could be combined with is steering-wheel wiggle.

Still, it would seem pretty hard to get around eye tracking, if made smart enough. That is, look specifically for driver-appropriate eye movement: Mostly looking ahead, but scanning side to side periodically, periodically blinking, and looking in the rear-view mirror. That sort of behavior would seem difficult to mimic.

But, you’re right to say that we can’t completely rule it out.

I think Cadillac is also working on that.
They did implement a seat vibration for something like blind spot monitoring. My mother's new Acura has all the latest safety gadgets, but they use the same warning sound.

Simon and BeBop would make better cars than Operation and Battleship.

Another good commentary, I think at least, by Nikki Gordon-Bloomfield:

Short version: Know, and inerrantly respect, the autonomous-driving limits of your car. If you don’t, you’re ultimately delaying deployment of semi-/autonomous vehicles.

This struck me as a pretty enlightening comparison:

YMMV, but for me at least, this further reinforces my impression that Cadillac’s eye-tracking approach is better than steering-wheel wiggle, to enforce ... driver participation in driving the car!

As is the case in many accidents, there's fault on both sides. My rough estimation of fault: 80% AI vs 20% human.

"The problem, says the NTSB, was that Uber’s software became confused by the pedestrian. Uber’s sensors spotted Elaine Herzberg about six seconds prior to impact -- enough time for the vehicle to brake and avoid hitting the woman. However, the system had a hard time figuring out what she was.

At the time of the crash, Herzberg was dressed in dark clothing and pushing a bicycle with no side reflectors. Herzberg didn’t look in the direction of the oncoming vehicle “until just before impact.” Toxicology test results of the pedestrian came back positive for marijuana and methamphetamine, the report noted."

Tons of blame to go around, sadly...

I’d put it at more like 60/40 than 80/20, especially in regard to the safety driver.

Sorry for the confusion, by "human" I meant "pedestrian".

American law is mostly written that you can go when it is safe. Depending on the drivers backgrounds defines whom it is safe for....
