I believe that @NutzAboutBolts is making a video on OCC installation in his car this weekend. Check out his DIY videos.(y)

You need to remove the air filter box, and connected air intake snorkel, at the least. Access, and install, in particular if you're going to mount the OCC low, is much improved if you remove the throttle body and intake manifold. This is very worthwhile regardless as it's good to clean out the intake manifold prior to OCC install.

Watch @NutzAboutBolts on intake manifold cleaning, and I believe he ref's to the EGR pipe video, for air filter box removal. The one comment I would make on the video: you can remove the throttle body without disconnecting the coolant lines, just lift it off and tie it out of the way, say to the inverter.

Also, there are several sources of intake manifold pollution: the PCV valve, but also the the EGR circuit, and to a minor extent the intake ports themselves, they appear to spit out a minor amount of oil. But anyway, the EGR is also a significant gummer upper, it dumps into the intake manifold through a main gallery that branches into four capillaries, one per intake.

While you don't need to clean the EGR at the same time, I would treat it as a one-two punch, don't delay EGR cleaning too long after intake manifold cleaning and OCC install. Or start with the EGR. It's all a blur, but I believe that's the way I did it.

Anyway, here's a pic of the PCV valve to intake manifold hose. I've got an extra recently, for if/when I trade in. You don't HAVE to chop this hose to splice in a OCC, but it's a very handy way to do it. The smaller end, at PCV valve, is 3/8" ID, and the flare out, at intake manifold end, is roughly 5/8" ID.

Nice! Did you end up using the @danlatu 'custom' mount then?

Yes, I also ran short on the hoses, so I’ll redo it with 2.5-3 feet so I have more wiggle. Overall it was back and forth to the store to find everything we needed lol... took the whole day to film this.

I wasn’t going to do it too, I have a sinus infection so I wasn’t feeling well but nick travelled here for 30 mins so we had to use the time to do it, or else it would’ve been another couple of weeks on the back burner.

This is just some thoughts, on cutting and gluing a bracket from a 2.5" ABS pipe end cap. It has an ID of 2.75", and wall thickness of .125". I'm not that sure about the 1 1/8" dimension, and the small end dimensions of the gusset; it's cut from the flat top of the cap, and there's some leeway for adjustment.

Near as I can measure, the ID of the original hose at intake manifold end is around 17.5 mm. This is my brand new part, not distorted/stretched or whatever. Not sure what the spigot on the intake manifold would be, maybe 18 mm, and a bit more at the bump at the end, maybe over 19.5 (3/4").

You could have one of the vendors on thingiverse print these out. Ask for peek filament. I have been so busy with designing parts for my new quadcopter frame right now. My machine is tied up printing prototype pods right now.

I've got a Mishimoto compact baffled occ in my CT (the same hybrid unit as Prius 3). Working well in catching some oil and mixture with water. However, it does not catch all the oil vaper or particles, since I dissambled the IM and saw the intake plenum behind throttle body still with oil inside it (several cc, I think). Much less than before but still a few and IM gets oily too. FYI

Same here. Even with baffle, stainless steel and brass filter in place, not able to trap 100% of oil mist. The clear hose is starting to turn a little tan. It is 90% better now and not finding huge pools of oil in the intake manifold. No rough starts is a huge plus+. It was raining hard here and noticed more than usual oil/water/fuel in catch can, . This is from 180 miles of heavy~medium rain with lots of mist trailing off other cars. No noticeable oil loss in 4786 miles.

It seems there is some carbon residue in the bottom of the can. Mine had some, too. Is it the carbon buildup transferred from PCV? or it is solidified from the catched oil inside the can?

Installed an oil catch can today on my 2015 two with 38k miles. Just bought this one owner dealer maintained two a couple of weeks ago for my wife’s daily driver. I’ve installed oil catch cans on other cars I’ve owned (Corvette’s).

Had an online 3d printer make up the bracket from Danlatu’s specs in nylon. Cost for the bracket was $42 including shipping. Bought the hoses and clamps at my local auto parts store. 3/4” to 1/2” adapter came from Lowe’s. Catch can came from Amazon and is the Ruien that others here have installed. Total cost all in was around $110.

The install took about 90 minutes but I wasn’t in any hurry. I watched the nutzaboutbolts install video a couple of times which was a big help. When I pulled the intake there was oil standing in the intake passages in the head and oil standing in the intake. Cleaned that up before I bolted it all back together. One other thing I did was where the hoses went near the egr pipe I split a piece of hose for additional insulation and added it to the occ hose. Also did the same on the coolant hose into the throttle body so the screw parts of the adapter hose clamps could not chafe the coolant line.

I plan for this car to last my wife at least 10 years and hopefully the catch can will help give us plenty of low cost driving.

I think the gas/water breaks down the viscosity of the oil, while heavier deposits stick to the bottom. Water/gas break down the viscosity of oil (synthetic too) in hot/cold/humid weather, short trip driving conditions. I do not trust the 10k oci. If I drove the car 65mph in perfect weather conditions 75 degrees, no humidty maybe 10k oci would be ok. But short trips, extreme hot, cold, damp, excessive idling, high rpm etc. breaks down oil faster. This oil breaking down faster is one of the causes for excessive engine wear, more blow-by, excessive oil consumption, more oil/water/fuel in catch can and or intake manifold. The gen 2 prius did not have 10k oci approval until later production years and that is why they have less threads regarding oil consumption issues along with better engine reliability. Oil is cheap engines are not. I am on 5k winter and 5k~7.5k oci summer (depending on driving conditions). I check my oil level and catch can every week so there are no surprises. Water/fuel turn into steam in the crankcase carrying oil with it. If you have worked in a commercial kitchen you will notice everything in the ceiling is covered in grease/oil. The hood have grease traps that catch this grease/oil and is not 100% effective. I have seen this on the roof exhaust fans.
