On Sunday my keys disappeared. I have torn my apartment apart and nothing. I think they may have fallen out of my pocket doing laundry and stolen because they haven’t been returned to the office. The dealer Told me Monday that if I had my car towed in they could make a copy for 200$ plus tax. I called today to make sure they had the fob in stock before I had it towed out there now a guy is saying I have to pay 3 hours of labor to reset which will run around 360$ plus tax and the key for 230$ plus tax. Do I have to reset my car to make a new key I plan on moving soon and can just lock up my steering wheel till then. I called a different Toyota dealer about 6 miles farther who quoted 260$ for key and reprogramming. Is there anyway to get the one closer to me to do that same price ?

No I was never given one when I purchased the car from a dealer in 2012

generally speaking, when you have lost both fobs, it gets expensive. the second dealer may be trying to get you in as well.

Try locksmiths. PopALock locksmiths generally know how to handle this, and they certainly don't charge $600.

This is less than the near $1,000 cost of losing keys in Gen 1 Prius.

    But yes, still expensive.
Look for an independent locksmiths to see if they can make it.

Hoping to help future key owners I bought a carabiner clip a long time ago and put it on my keychain and the second I get out of my car I clip my keys on my pants belt loop.
It’s fast it’s easy and you can forget about it.

Quite a while ago I put my keys down in a lowes aisle to look at something and that took me quite a while to find it. I knew I had to do something. My keys are too big for my pants pocket.

I still can’t find my second key--I gave BOTH to dealerships so they could put in new batteries (2006 Prius). They only returned one BUT I can no longer use smart key function as that second key MUST be inside.

No help from dealership...I have torn that car apart and cannot find it!

So I hit the “engage” button under steering column to be able to lock my car. If someone gets in my car they can just drive it away--unless I remember to keep the engaged button down.

    Darn!

So are you saying you gave them 2 keys, they returned you 2 keys. 1 you know where it is and take with you, and 1 that is stuck inside the car somewhere but you don't know where? This is preventing you from locking the car because there is a key inside?

Well first off, you can lock the car with the mechanical key. So do that.

As for finding the key, I'd unplug the 3 various SKS sensors one at a time, see if you can try to locate which antenna it is being received on. As to finding the key, the Gen-2 has lots of hiding places. I assume you've looked in the center console, the flip-down cd holder thing, the drawer that pulls out of the console, the rear cup holder, etc.

Are u sure the fob is really in the car? leave the one good fob you have in the house and then try to start the car to see if it is hidden in there.

if you can start the car with no fob in it yes its in there.

Try the visor over the window, or most likely fell down between the seats. Get a flashlight and look under the seats. make sure its not stuck in between the seats.
    Glovebox.
On the lip where the dashboard led assy is where it has the speedometer.

I never would have driven away from the dealer without both fobs in my hand.

I usually find lost items between the driver seat and center storage area. Often down by the seat rail.
Wallets, keys, sunglasses, easily hide in the vertical area.

Did you check the secret storage bin on the front of the console by the floor? Many owners don't even know it's there.

Best AS SEEN ON TV product ever is the little black plastic pockets they sell that fit in between the seats. Seat catchers. They catch all the dust, dirt and anything that falls down in that impossible to clean area. I got a set in all my cars there great. Keeps that area very clean.
You just pull them out and rinse them out.

    These bad boys right here.

Just for future: consider the scenario where someone finds your fob, say it fell to the ground somewhere on your travels, and some good Samaritan has found it . What can they do to get it back to you? If you've attached a small luggage tag or label with your phone number: a lot.

Ditto for the locking lug nut socket.

This sounds crazy silly but you did checked the dash slot, right? If you are used to SKS, you might never think of using that!

I thought of that too but it seemed to easy lol....

But the car would always start!

That’s where the dealer would have left it!

    Checked the dash slot-WOW!

Actually took car in as the mpg had dropped drastically and everyone on forum said “You need a new hybrid battery.” (wrong)

Fob was under the 12 volt battery! Autonation Lithia Springs had lost it there and didn’t want to tell me THEY had lost it. Rick Hendrik Toyota found it--right on guys! Autonation has zero idea how it ended up there--but glad to get it back. I was using the ENGAGE button in the meantime.

Autonation ALSO told me that the wheels were A-OK with good tread. So when I took it into Atlanta a month later, they said “We found the reason that you mpg dropped. (I had driven a total of 68 miles.) Two tires are bald and there’s a chunk taken out of inside side wall. 4 new tires and back up to 47 mpg!

Some dealerships need to be closed.

All's well that ends well - glad the fob showed up! Figuring out which dealers to avoid is an ongoing issue!

You drove off The dealership without both fobs in your hand.
