Hi everyone! My wife has owned her pearl white Prius since it was new .It now has 135,000 miles and we started to notice paint peeling where the A pillars meet the roof line. I called Toyota and they said they have not heard of it before. Anyone else experience this?

The car has never been garaged and not washed as much as it should have been. But there also has never been any body damage other than a front bumper cover replacement. It also still has the factory window. Has anyone had Toyota cover this? Thank you

yes, and no. it is rare, but does happen occasionally. toyota won't cover it, too many possibilities besides defective. they don't do the best paint job in the world, but it is what it is.
if it really bothers you, have a body shop take a look at it.

did you call the dealer or corporate?

I called the corporate office. It's a bummer that they don't do anything to cover it. I understand that it's extremely variable on how it can happen, but this particular case is just pure bad prep and/or materials weren't compatible. Thank you for the reply.

agreed, but it is 8 years old. not that it should be peeling, but most companies don't warranty anything that long.

8 years of sun/rain damage and lack of car washes. That's a recipe for disaster on car paint

I often see Gen2 and older 3's and think of how well the paint is holding up on them. In California, the heat does wonders on auto paint. I have never seen one with the clear coat failing. Toyota did a great job with paint on a Prius.

In my opinion, it's a recipe for disaster on clear coat, and not base coat. almost nothing should make the base coat come off of the primer. Seems to me that it's bad adhesion from the start. I think that we will start seeing many others in the near future with the same issue. Also I have other cars that are older with less care that don't have the problem, so that again makes me think that it's something to do with the paint process.

I have read a lot about how the paint on the Prius is thin and weak (chips and scratches easily). Plus this is not a clear coat issue. However, the clear is holding up great!

I have yet to see this, the only weak area that I am aware of is the rear wing.

Sometimes new cars have paintwork before delivery to dealership. Just a thought.

I would show it to the dealer, even though it may be a long shot. My 2012 had paint chips just where the top of the windshield meets the roof and paint starting to bubble (rust under the paint).

The dealer looked at it and he repainted the whole roof under the warranty. Didn't cost me a dime and got a Corolla for a loaner for a week. That was a year ago.

I have heard of that before, didn't consider it this time, but I'm going to look a little closer now! Thanks

Oh wow! I definitely will! Who knows, maybe they will understand that it's a flaw and not from neglect.

I purchased a 2014 black Prius with 32k miles on it and the paint is chipping off the back bumper. Someone backed up into me when it was parked and the black paint just peeled off ! It’s very frustrating how misleading the damage appears when in actuality there are small dents !

2010 Blizzard Pearl Prius with 69,000 miles original owner IMG_0542.JPG IMG_0546.JPG . Not even a single door ding and the the paint is shinny and like new. The paint below the drivers side back door is starting to peel just below the weather stripping. I am replacing the weather strip today but the peeling was first noticed a couple weeks ago. The paint is coming away from the primer - an area about 3/4 inch by 3 inches. Today I removed any loose paint, taped the area, primed it, and top coated it with hopes I got all the loose area taken care of. I used the blue painters tape to mask and even that pulled more paint off that had looked solid. The paint is unbelievably thin. I think we will start seeing a lot more cases of this.

I'm seeing this problem, it started about 4 months ago. I called Toyota today, they acknowledged there's an existing warranty extension for this issue with other models but not for Prius. They said (fwiw) that they rely on customer reports of issues to decide when to add vehicles to warranty extensions, so anyone seeing this should call them, and report it.

Update: Paint is now peeling the entire length of the left rear door, above the front right door, right windshield pillar, and the roof. Toyota is of no help. Maybe a class action lawsuit or call to the local TV channel would help.

    Park outside dealership...

We were considering that colour, in 2010. They had nothing on the lot, so opted for silver.

    You dodged a bullet.

My beloved company bought bone-stock, zero-option G3's back in the early 2010s because they needed to "green-up" their image.
HOWEVER (comma!) they did need the cars to be white so that they would match our trucks......or some such reason.

Anyway....all of our vehicles were bought with one and ONLY ONE option............the E-Z-peel Blizzard White Pearl paint.

    They're all pealing.
    Every single one.
It's a factory defect, pure and simple.
Toyota is doing NOTHING about it because (a) their cooperate culture is poo and (2) all of the G3's are aging-out, and loooooong out of the OEM warranty.

Today, my beloved company is buying zero Toyotas for the cooperate fleet AFAIK, and the calico colored cars are quickly being retired despite my company's long-standing policy of running cars for either lunar mileage, or drinking age - whichever comes first.

Don't expect much from the mother-ship.
    Besides....
    What's the real-world damage of a 10-year-old eco-box with peeling paint?? ;)

Toyota charged a premium for that colour too.
