After years of reading in priuschat about Gen 2 battery packs I have come to the following conclusions:

Batteries go bad. It is not a question of if, but when.

There were very few lemons. Gen 2 battery pack failures were pretty rare for first 10 years of battery life.
Heat and extreme charge/discharge use accelerated battery failure, i.e.,
Priuses In hotter climes failed at a greater rate, as did Priiuses which drove up and down hills regularly.

Rebuilt battery packs have at least 2 inherent problems. 1 - they are already older packs and repaired with used/old replacement modules and; 2 - the modules / cells in a pack need to be “balanced” electrically to avoid repeated failure.

At around 10 years of age, the failure rate of the battery packs increased noticeably, so the older a pack, the greater the risk of failure.

So, if a Gen 2 is in good enough condition to keep for years, investing in a new Toyota battery pack is a reasonable option. An option with its own speed bumps, though. Dealer quotes reported for purchase and install of new pack range from mid two thousand to mid four thousands.

If only keeping for a short while, “rebuilt” is more affordable.

Or, the new Prius are extremely nice starting in mid twenties

And, Priuschat is an awesome resource ! Muchas gracias to all
