    Hello friend

I'm Prius3 user in Thailand. My 12v Battery checking is bad condition (12.3v). I'm looking for new 12v battery. But in my country dosen't have AGM battery in the market(very difficult to find out). And there are 12v AGM battery at Toyota dealer but the price is four time price compare with SMF battery.

I have the question. Does it neccessary to be AGM Battery. In my country is difficult to use AGM Battery. Please advise your idea.

    Thanks

I have tried numerous batteries and they all work. Try a lead acid around 45 ampere rating. Watch it and monitor that at it’s being charged. 12-15 Volts
Conform to Size, poles, current and Voltage.

No doubt the purist will join in with unrealistic solutions.

I am a purist. Be aware that the only reason Toyota specifys a AGM battery is occupant safety. There is simply less acid to fly around in an accident. With a flooded battery there is more acid.

That makes sense but, what is the solution to his problem? No corner drugstore with the perfect cherry coke.

Correct, a flooded battery will work fine so long as nothing ever goes wrong. in the same vein, you only need the external vent when things go badly. Sadly, a Hydrogen fire is the badly things might go.

Where the right battery exists, get that one. I am asked trust worrichai that the cost of the battery exceeds the value of his life. I resist that attitude.

Connect a smart charger to the jumper terminals when not driving, and that battery could last a long time.

How much is the dealer charging for the AGM battery?

FYI, for comparison, I replaced the 12v battery in my 2010 Prius with the correct replacement version and it was $217.67 back in May 2017. 8.375% sales tax.

This is the best idea. 12.3 V is not bad, don’t give up on the battery. Help it.

I knew that, but it's at least "something" to compare to.

I don't think it matters which chemistry you use. Just line you say, those batteries are expensive. But lead acid battery with the same capacity and voltage, can also serve.
Note that even some dry celled lead batteries can also serve perfectly. So, don't worry yourself getting AGM. But if you got the money, and that makes you happy, go for it.

    Toyota AGM
The stock battery in Canada was $271 (Canadian dollars, roughly worth 75 cents US) a couple of years back, would assume it's gone up since then. There's also available aftermarket AGM batteries that are the correct dimension, meet the specifications, for around $200~220. In the States I see there's similar aftermarket batteries, for around $145~155.

Bottom line: quality AGM batteries cost a bit more than regular flooded batteries, anywhere in the world. Your regular battery price is very cheap, but perhaps the fit and/or specifications are not good enough. Also: it will be more dangerous in a crash, and more likely to be venting hydrogen into the passenger compartment.

So you are saying $69 Vs $275 // While your AGM bat is still good, try the $69.00 job
and let us know how everything works out.
