No, a SUV/crossover so more profit can be tacked on.

The Model X starting price is $5000 more than the S. A third seat row adds $3000 for 7 seats, or $6000 for 6(the second row is two bucket seats vs a bench). As an SUV, the Y could have AWD standard, which would be another price increase for the starting point over the 3. The base battery may also be larger to make up for its weight and aerodynamics

I'd guess $40k starting for the short range Y with just two seat rows.

"Thoughts" and hope turn into expectations and expectations turn into "promises." And that's how we arrive at "Elon lied to me."
That is possible, but I doubt it. I don't think there will be a 'short range' version of the model Y.

To be clear, Elon has not given any hint of the price point, features, or range of the model Y at this time.

Not so fast....the shorts are more likely eating cake after today. It's a wild ride, but the heat is still being turned up, and Tesla is under the microscope. Employees are starting to leak information out, that's not helping the cause.

All but a few of the 30K Tesla employees are very gruntled. Those 2 or 3 that are disgruntled should move on to some other employer where they can be disgruntled there, too.

Missing the point. All companies have disgruntled employees. But how many are reporting negative finding to the press and why are they doing this?

but not all companies disgruntled employees are plants from big oil.

the point is that government agencies have found no wrong doing, and disgruntled employees have been, shall we say, 'loose' with facts?

Nothing like the feeling of a rug being pulled out from under you....... twice. . :p

From a March 31st, 2016 live blog of the launch:

"Elon standing next to the Model 3. Here’s why this mass-market car is such a big deal.

Elon says: “How are we going to make these cars. There’s two parts, first the Fremont factory, so we’re confident we can make high volume cars there. And what about the batteries? We need to absorb the entire world’s lithium-ion production. To give you a sense of scale, the Gigafactory will have the largest footprint of any kind anywhere. It will make more lithium-ion batteries than any other factory combined. It will also produce the most advanced battery cell of its kind. It’s already operational today.”

“Deliveries will be next year. I feel fairly confident it will be next year (everyone laughs).”

    “And it’ll be $35,000.”

Productions has no real meaning compared to acutal sales. It's been reported that Elon yelled at his empolyees working them like dogs trying to push 5,000. http://www.autonews.com/article/20180703/OEM05/180709923/tesla-model-3-elon-musk?

There is no way you can sustian production numbers with the deficiency of a production system that relies on automation that causes manufacturing defects, wasteful materials, bottlenecks, increase in operating cost, time and supply demand. There’s a reason why Toyota’s Production System is human centuralized. With manual labor, assembly line workers can inspect every single part durning assembly to elimate defective parts once a defect is found. Takt Time is used to prevent bottlenecks when there is a problem or assembly worker on the production line didn’t finish in time. Kaizen, “continously improvement” is used throught the entire production process. Quality is lacking with a rushed half baked product out the door, with no room for continuously improvement. Elon Musk philoshphy is “Build Fast Fix It Later”. There’s no reason that the company should need to build a tent outside when GM/Toyota that used the very same plant was able to mass produce millions ofvehicles with no problems using an efficient Just-in-Time lean manufacturing system.

Nonsense. The quoted segment is about the Model 3.
Bisco asked about the Model Y.
There has been no rug pulled out from anyone and there has been no statements about the cost of the Model Y.

The model 3 now being produced is the $35,000 car. However, it is not now available it its most basic form (in about 6 months for reservation holders). Elon said originally that the model 3 would not be introduced until 2019/20. As a result of the unprecedented interest in the model 3, he moved the timeline up two years for a highly optioned model 3 to facilitate cash flow. His words above were taken out of context, misunderstood, and consequently false expectations were created (and Elon certainly added to the confusion). It is necessary to look at the bigger picture when trying to figure out what Tesla is trying to accomplish.

"Industry experts were dubious when, in May 2016, Tesla announced its decision to advance its 500,000 total-unit build plan (combined for Model S, Model X, and Model 3) to 2018, two years earlier than previously planned, in order to accelerate its target for Model 3 output. As predicted, there were "production bottlenecks" and "production hell".
