I'm looking to purchase a 2012 Prius plug-in. Took it for a test trive and immediately saw this message when I attempted to enter electric-only mode:

ev mode not available low battery

The battery image appeared to indicate the battery was almost full.

    Is this normal?

Also, do you like your Prius plug-in? Thx!

Yes it's completely normal! You Need to plug it in and let it charge. The PIP behaves like a normal Prius after it's EV range is used up. The battery icon on the dash jumps to full near the end of the EV mode indicating that there is as much battery capacity left as a non plug in would have.

I LOVE my PIP!, best car I've ever had!

What @Jerry Liebler said. Here's a picture to illustrate it.

When you're in EV mode, the battery icon will be solid and vary in size according to the state of charge.
When in HV mode, either because you've used up the EV portion of the battery or you put it into HV mode deliberately, the battery changes to a series of bars like a regular Prius.

The one difference between the PiP and the regular Prius when the EV portion is used up is that you cannot manually put it in electric mode with the selector button.
