It's good to read the manual cover-to-cover - you can also get a manual online - there are a few versions I've got EU, AUST and US - there might be a UK one - check Toyota UK .com. It's handy to have on the computer, as you can then search it, rather than leafing through 750 pages.

Fill the tank (to first click) - it won't really give accurate readings till after the first fill. I've averaged 68 imp MPG without really trying.

Congratulations, this is my first Prius too, although not my first automatic and I love it. Its the best 'auto' I have had!

Several years ago we had a co-worker from the Netherlands who would always needle us whenever he visited us, making fun of our "soft living" in the U.S. with our automatic cars, complaining that whenever he rented a car here he couldn't get a manual transmission as all they ever had was automatic. Then someone told me later that he recently got a new car back home, you guessed it - an automatic. So I guess we corrupted him

 

Is he getting older? Duh - of course he is!!

I'm not sure how far back you're talking, but Autos have improved over the years. Dramatically.

2 speed Powerglides and Hydramatics which droned as they slurred between gears from the '60s - the '70s were mostly 3 speed slush-boxes, guaranteed to suck extra petrol.

Then the '80s they started with lock-up torque converters which locked OK, but some with a clunk when they locked up - and didn't really seem to make much difference to fuel use.

But now, the 6 and 8 speed proper autos with lock-up autos are very nice to drive. I'm not impressed with the hesitating DSGs, and belt-driven CVTs are improving, but just seem not very convincing.

But - once you get used to a PRIUS, it becomes the ideal auto. Logical when you look at how it's made too.

That doesn't mean I'm not hankering for a 6sp Manual with my next car - just possible.

 

He was far from old, And it wasn't that many years ago. I think it's just one of those things like someone who insists on mowing their own yard, but then when they experience having someone else do it for them they realize hey this isn't so bad

 

Same with my s-i-l who had all automatics because they weren't as good as he was...
Now he's driving a beemer auto!
