    My car:
    2013 Prius v
    trim 5 w pan roof.
    82,000 miles now

I made it without any concern to the Rockies at night time. I needed roll back up my windows after a few of having the car off. It went into "map check" mode on the nav screen. It appearently got stuck, but remember in the Rockies. Duh! From trying to get past that screen via cutting on and off after stuck for a bit, everything on the car died. Not a single light on, couldn't unlock doors nor trunk using key fab. Thankfully I was able to roll up my windows to a crack while it was doing the Map Checks before nothing. So I ended up having to remove stuff from battery size of the trunk from the inside out. So not fun. Got lucky with a jump from some couple.

Now I have had problems with it doing the occasional "system check" when I start the car, which is when it takes several minutes to come on. Due to poir boosts from humity and heat, I now cut off everything in case battery problem. I also have gotten very good at resetting the windows, which now is a simple irritation.

Any thoughts before I finish making it home and put it in the shop?

Sounds like time to replace the 12 V battery. If you have the chance try to get it checked at a store.

Oh, there are jump points under the hood much more accessible than under a full trunk! Please check the manual for where to connect. Positive is under a little red flip cap inside the fuse box. Negative is part of the engine. I am hoping you have access to a manual to find the points in pictures. I’m afraid for now I need to get back to bed....

I printed out the under hood instructions and kept them in the glove box for my wife and anyone who might want to help. I too suspect your 12v battery, especially if it's original. Most likely its just good enough for normal situations but does not much reserve. I have attached another version of the jump starting procedure that can be printed (if you don't have a printer, send it to a local kinkos for print).

PS: It's a good idea for everybody to actually open the hood and access the fuse box and the positive (red) jump terminal. It is small so a small cheap pair of jumper cables is a good thing to carry behind the back seat in the umbrella channel.

As suggested above, all symptoms of a failing 12V auxiliary battery. Easy fix.

Thanks, jzchen. I will be sure to check my manuals for the jump start option under my hood. I just won't get to it until later tonight, since we have finally made it to Yosemite from the East Coast. It's wonderful to finally be back in our home state.

Thanks, everyone. I greatly appreciate the attachments, which I have saved as screenshots on my cell for when no data or Wi-Fi access.

If it is just the battery due to triple digit heat plus humidity and the mountains galore (I-64 West, I-70 west, and I-50 west, then my wagon should be happier this coming week once fully home.

I'll be sure to post how it all turns out.

    Thanks again, everyone.

The under the hood red/hot circuit breaker jump start point has been a huge help. Thanks. Thanks. Thanks.

I had to get it jumped again today. Due to urgent calendar date event items out of my control, I am still trying to get it to the dealership. I'm not a big fan of my local ones, and prefer the one I purchased my car from about 45 minutes to 1.5 hour drive one way depending upon traffic.

    Additional weird things I've noticed:
    1. I gave up on resetting my car clock - either looses a lot of time in one shot or gains time very quickly. Not helpful.

    2. I also temporarily gave u on my Trip And MpG reader being accurate. It's like it magically decided I like this number. From having used about 8 gals of gasoline, it stated my Trip readout only being like 20 miles. I know my mpg isn't that bad.

Why is it that my key fab doesn't work with simply unlooking and locking my car doors, when it is dead or has a painful slow start? Yes batteries in my key fabs are good.

BTW: how does the dealership treat ya with a car full of stuff, when fixing something? I simply am being forced to bring in the car full or unload almost all of it into a new storage unit, which is an added expense and thus time. I'm now popping open my car hood, when I am going into a meeting or for even dining in at a restaurant just to be on the safe side in case jump is needed and thus can't unlock doors with my keys at that time.

    Curious and trying to learn.

    TIA

High ignition-off current draw? (Further taxes an old and failing 12V auxiliary battery.)

I hardly ever go to the dealer unless I can’t fix it on my own I’m afraid.

I was trying to find if the usual local auto parts stores like AutoZone and O’Reilly’s would help replace the 12 V battery for you for free, as I thought some of them do. So far with those two I don’t think O’Reilly’s will if they have to remove the spare tire from what I read on their site. (But I just realized I do not think the spare needs to be removed to access the battery)? It would be more cost effective than labor at a dealer I would think.... I had a friend who decided to use AAA to replace her battery, non Prius though, even though her husband does electrical installations for police departments, and I want to assume it would be an easy task for him.

Other sources are Costco or Sam’s Club if you are a member, or Walmart. I found Walmart has these for sale:

OPTIMA YellowTop Dual Purpose Battery, Prius ds46b24r - Walmart.com

Maybe some who have used it can chime in on whether they are still good like they used to be....

Changing the 12v battery is easy and fast. Yes you have to pull up and out some trunk floor panels. No you don't touch the spare tire.

How do I know this, I once had a bottle of wine (red) brake loose in the trunk and smash into another one thus braking. In spite of a Weathermate mat back there, some sloshed over the lip of the mat and into the 12v battery compartment on the right rear of the under the floor. I needed to remove the battery to clean up the spill.

If you pulled out those panels and pulled into Autozone with the battery exposed, I'll bet they would do it in 5 minutes.

An Optima yellow is a good choice. Ours is on its fourth year of service in the v, with the CTEK LED battery status indicator.

I previously used the Optima yellow in the CR-V until it developed an internal dead short, and in the sports car, but switched to a much lighter, laydown lithium battery.

    Update:

I got oil change at my usual shop at home finally. They discovered that the 12v battery was loose, so tightened it for free. They didn't have time to test the battery but said the electrical system and all is fine and to take it to dealership for new battery if problems persist. While I didn't like hearing take it to dealership, I have been thrilled that just tightening it worked.

I since almost everything is in storage and out of the car, I'll use this time to take a look later at the battery to see how easy it would be f me to tighten it again if ever needed.

Plus, I'm also added one of those portable charger/starters to my Wish List.

Thanks again for all the help and support. :)

Changing the battery in a v is no more difficult than in a conventional car. Except if you have the trunk full. Of groceries and melting ice cream in 95 degree sun. You can jump a v via a little box under the hood. Jumper cables fit nicely in the spare tire compartment. Get long one with thick cables. Don't try to jump someone else's car with a Prius.

So very true about how when the trunk is full, it's definitely a bigger burden and hassle.

Y'all saved me from emptying out that part of my trunk about 3 times or so by the hot circuit breaker under the hood in that fuse box. Let's just say, I also learned to avoid putting super heavy items on the battery side of the trunk. Bonus it is a motivator for me to get those old yearbooks of mine digitized and gone once and for all.

My problem with replacing the battery until absolutely necessary is the cost - and was trunk packed while traveling back home across country. Driving via the I-64 to Hwy 70 to then Hwy 50 had put additional possible costs, too due to not necessarily being close enough to a dealership to not have to worry about extra mileage from possible towing. Was it still worth the scare going such routes back home? Yes for the experience. I can always take a new and different route or set of routes next time.

Glad you are home safe and sound!

One other battery to keep handy is the one for the key/remote. We were in HI and first sign of trouble with the rental, a Nissan, was that the vehicle stopped responding to the unlock button while we were trying to find it on the lot. I had to use the manual key to open the door. Later on in the week all of a sudden the dash display started giving key not detected or invalid key, and I couldn’t start it for 4 or so tries in hot weather with chocolates in the back... Would have had to drive to the rental place at the airport, read waste of plenty of time, to swap out the car, instead used the spare we had from my son’s toy and no problems until we returned the vehicle at the end of our trip....

When my wife and I go on a long trip, we have the passenger swap their normal set of keys for the set that has the key of the car we are driving. Since she always chooses her car and I mine, it works that we each have two sets of keys. Even better the extra set only has one key and the fob. So light.

Takes care of the battery problem and the Oh sugar I locked the keys in the car problem both. Last thing I want to happen is get back jet lagged from an overseas trip and a fob doesn't work or a battery is discharged. Which is also why I have a great set of jumper cables in each of our cars.
I buy the batteries on Amaz... and buy two at a time so I update both sets and we know her and my other car sets get few uses so they will be fresh when we need em.
