LDA Does Not Pick Up Lane Info Correctly

Hi everyone. I just bought a Prius Three and I noticed the LDA system worked terribly so I would like to ask for everyone's help to see if anyone has encountered the problem before and how to fix it.

The problem is the system does not recognize the lane markers at the start of each trip, but if I go on a highway for around 10 miles+, it starts to work perfectly for the rest of the trip. I know the system did not recognize the lane markers because on the dash screen it did not show a solid line but instead two parallel lines on each side, which in the manual shows it means the car does not recognize the lane markers.

Here's an important piece of information. I found out that the windshield has been replaced before. And it's not OEM glass now. So I suspect it needs a camera calibration. So the dealer helped me take the car in to Toyota Escondido for a calibration. And it STILL performs this way. The calibration did not fix the problem. And the grumpy technician at Toyota Escondido took me for a test drive and told me there is not a problem and the system is not designed to work all the time. Can anyone please confirm that this is not how it's supposed to behave?

Here's a video showing my 10-minute drive on the highway. You can see the system starts to work after around 6:30 in the video.

I am really confused now. I suspect it's because the camera was not correctly installed that it's beyond the capability of the calibration to let it work correctly. And maybe the car learns a little bit each trip after driving for a while and that's why the system works after driving on the highway for a while.

What do you think? Thank you in advance for any thoughts you share.

You mentioned going onto the highway and it working... just checking you know that LDA only works above certain speeds? I don't recall the exact speed but it's around 30MPH and above. The lane markings have to be clear. The camera has to have a clear view of the road. The glass in front of the camera has to be clean. The road often has to be dry. You need to be not driving into the sun. There needs to be a reasonable distance of lane markings visible, so if you're driving too close to the vehicle in front it won't be able to see enough.

I can confirm that this is not how it's supposed to behave. Watching your video, I don't think any of the reasons @The Professor gave for it not to work would apply in your case. If it always starts to work several minutes into your drive consistently, there wouldn't seem to be any rational explanation (other than your theory about some type of learning behaviour, that is). I'm guessing you did not buy the car from a Toyota dealer. It sounds like they did not inform you that the windshield had been replaced, possibly because they knew the LDA was not working properly and hoped you wouldn't notice. I believe you might have some legal recourse if you can prove that they sold the car with a known defect that was not disclosed. I would definitely keep after them until this is fixed (notwithstanding the fact that most of us find the LDA on the Gen 4 pretty useless even when it is working properly) ;-)

What is interesting is that it appeared to not be working, but when you slowed down and sped up again, it kicked in then. The manual says:
    upload_2018-7-22_21-35-54.png

    But the lines appear clear.

I've never used it without RADAR Cruise turned on - and it's never failed to work OK. What is yours like with RADAR Cruise?

Sorry, I hadn't noticed the video. It does look faulty to me too now I've seen it.

I've used mine with and without cruise control. I don't think it changes the behaviour.

As the car is surely still under its 5 year warranty, Toyota should fix it for free. At least that's how it works in the UK.

From the video the LDA should have beeped at you several times. I keep mine on at max sensitivity just for a reminder if I'd get distracted. I do notice that even with well marked highway lines its less sensitive to the right side line then the center line. My only complaint about the LDA system is the Steering Assist which I usually keep OFF because I usually drive on rural roads, and even when driving on a well marked highway if you drift across the right line, the steering assist isn't strong enough to return you to the lane, particularly if there's a "rumble strip" there which puts extra drag on the right side, and you'll drift off into whatever is on the birm.
As I understand it, the 2016 optional LDA and Lane Keeping assist would actively keep the Prius centered in the lane, but apparently customers didn't like the sensation of the car making the steering adjustments to do so. If Toyota would enable that in firmware I'd have it done in a heartbeat, but of course they won't...

Yes, they make it clear that it's not designed to keep the Prius centred in a lane - it's not a form of Self Driving, but an alert to prevent you straying into another lane. It's essentially LDA - "Lane Departure Alert" with steering assistance. On dead straight roads, it will steer back to the lane, on gentle curves, I feel it give a tug - more an alert than steering.

That's definitely not working correctly, mine picks up lanes all the time unless the lane widens (like at interchanges). Even Bott's Dots are picked up if I actually cross them. Naturally there is no "learning" period, the computer isn't sophisticated enough for that. Do your automatic high-beams work correctly?

I suspect it's not just calibration, but some issue with the camera itself or maybe the glass. Is the glass tinted where the camera is or something? Maybe something is loose in the installation? If you got it from a dealer, I would go in and make a scene until they fix it. If you got it from a third party, you might be out of luck =/

Come to think of it - (I think) the same camera is involved with RADAR Cruise and maybe Auto High Beam - but a different sensor for Auto Off headlights.

Does your RADAR Cruise work properly?

After watching your video I can definitively say mine does NOT behave like yours. Mine picks up the lane markings almost as soon as I go above 28mph, no learning or anything required, and mine would have been solid white lines for the entirety of that drive, for sure 100%.

I’d say your camera needs calibration. Are you sure that the dealer didn’t accidentally calibrate the radar instead? I have heard of this happening.

Either the dealer did not properly calibrate the camera, calibrated the radar instead, of your windshield is causing so much distortion that the camera can not be calibrated at all behind it(but tech stream would have errored while the dealer was trying to calibrate it, assuming they did it knew how to/what was going on).

Radar cruise is the radar in the bumper behind the emblem, totally separate. The camera at the top of the windshield is for auto high beam and lane keep.

You didn't have extra tint put on the top if the windshield......did you ??

The only place that the system on my Ford works good is: Fairy fresh BLACK pavement with relatively new lines on it......and it works better at night.

Using a camera to actually SEE the lines is kind of a kludge and you should not depend on it.

If you really think it is not working right, by all means take it in.
    Good luck with that.
I can already see the "Could not duplicate owners complaint." written in the "resolution" portion of the work order.

Thank you for your input. However, I think that might not be the issue because the malfunction always happens for the first 10-15 miles but afterwards, it works very effectively regardless of the road condition. I live in the sunny San Diego and I think the conditions are usually met.

Thank you so much for confirming the issue. You are right, I did not purchase the car from a Toyota Dealer. But ironically the dealer Escondido Auto Supercenter is actually very helpful in helping me to get this fixed. They do not seem to be previously aware of this issue and they have already paid to get me a camera calibration. The problem is the dealer that performed the calibration Toyota Escondido do not want to acknowledge the malfunction. They believe they did everything right and the car is working as designed regardless of me showing them the issue in a test drive with their technician. I think they are not fully aware how it is supposed to function and count on the rare cases that it actually works when the LDA alarm goes off to indicate the system is not faulty. They also made their case by saying there is not an error code generated in the system. I am sending them the video and hopefully, they can come to their senses and help me get this fixed.

Thank you for your reply. The RADAR Cruise works well. I did not turn that on in the first half of that trip showed in the video to avoid complication. I can say that regardless of if the LDA works well or not, the RADAR cruise control behaves as expected. I do not know how it's gonna perform in corner cases when it requires the camera to better understand the road conditions, but generally speaking, it is reliable for my daily use.

The Lane Tracing Assist in Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 for 2019 Corolla Hatchback seems like an exciting feature like what we wished to have. If only there could be an upgrade for current cars that would be awesome but I know that's highly unlikely for traditional car manufactures.

I agree with you. I think the problem should be the installation. The automatic high-beams work okay. I think it worked as expected. I only have maybe a few opportunities to try that out and it seems to work correctly. I bought it from a dealer that has an in-store warranty. They agreed to get it fixed at a Toyota Dealer at no cost to me but the problem is the Toyota Dealer does not recognize the problem. They performed a camera calibration but that did not solve the problem.

Yeah, that's my understanding as well. I think everything works fine except for LDA. I have not been able to test the corner cases like a crazy curve that may require the camera to work with the Radar, but generally speaking the cruise function hasn't surprised me negatively.

That could be the case. I will ask the Toyota dealer to see if they are certain they performed the calibration correctly. Considering they didn't even know how the system is supposed to behave, I should have asked them to clarify more. However, they did charge the dealer I bought the car from the correct price for camera calibration. ($403, but discounted at $266.)

If the dealer constantly says that yours is working fine, demand that they take you in a test drive with a Prius on their lot, ride on the same road, and ask them why this Prius works every time and yours does not.

You are right lol. Mossy Toyota in San Diego says that in the report. However, Kearny Mesa Toyota's technician was able to confirm the malfunction. What's inconvenient for me is the dealer have the calibration done at Toyota of Escondido. That's another one I don't have a report here.

That's what I demanded, but they told me they don't have one available at the moment but says I can pay another $135 diagnose fee and they'll do a test drive with another vehicle to compare with. I am bringing this up to BBB if they don't get back to me with a solution soon. The dealer I bought the car from is also working with me to get this addressed.

Hmm, I mentioned earlier that the windshield has been replaced with a non-OEM glass so that voids the manufacturer's warranty. However, the dealer is willing to fix this for me. The problem is the Escondido Toyota Service department does not recognize this as a problem and had already performed calibration(did not solve the problem). When you said "Pixel2 are you referring to the device I used to record this? I actually did it on my action camera".
