Someone once stated, "the deep South when it's not a desired destination":
    • Dr Pepper in the Coke machine
    • Chicken fried steak covers the plate - 'White or brown gravy?'
    • Sweet or unsweet tea year round
    • Grits - cheese and/or sausage gravy?
    • Sweet corn bread muffins - breakfast, lunch, or dinner
    • Pecan pie
    • Honey, butter rice for breakfast
    • Good, fried catfish
    • Smoked meat BBQ (not those funky pizza sauces from inferior regions)
    • Pinto beans year round with smoked ham pieces
    • One can take a breath while talking and not get interrupted
    • Yankee 'talk' means hiding the knives and guns because someone is going to get hurt
    • Opening a door for a gal by running around the car is expected and does not scare her
    • Gun control means group size at the range
    • Road rage means someone is going to die
    • Four cars arrive at the same time at a four way stop take extra time to figure out who goes first
    • Southern gals expect to be obeyed and have 51% of the marriage stock . . . (terrifying!)

    1) My wife lives in the South, and I prefer to live near her.
    9) Okra and crawfish.
    10) Southerners seem relaxed with eccentricity.

Which is why we tolerated Republicans in the past and Democrats today.

ps. This may read like political but I can provide Shelby Foote and Robert E. Lee examples if needed:

I've genuinely enjoyed visiting the south from late November through mid January for a few years now.

You can keep the rest. :D

We tried the capital of the south for 6 years then moved back west to the best coast;).

The humidity pushed the wife over the edge, so I said “yes dear”.

Bob, you left out iron skillet fried chicken that takes 3 hours to cook properly. Also when Southerners give directions by pointing and saying over yonder, you know how far it is by the elevation of their arm, like shooting an arrow. Higher is farther. Gone fish'in, back at "dark 30".

When I was in Marine bootcamp, they served fried okra at least once every two weeks. A lot of my fellow recruits had never seen it before. So I traded everything else on my tray for fried okra and knew I'd gotten the better deal.

I was born and raised in The Northwest. In the shadow of a city, and in the suburbs. I've actually traveled quite a bit, but can't say I have much experience in the South.
I learned much of what I believe from watching "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" , which left me only with the take away that Elizabeth Taylor was a stunningly good looking woman.- My opinion.

I would venture to say, that there is the historical truth, the cultural truth, the economic truth, and stereotypes applied to all of the before mentioned, embracing various degrees of truth, both ugly and romanticized.

    But reading Bob Wilson's list?
Any region with such a delicious sounding menu? Has to be appreciated.

About 10 years ago I was working on a project in southern Alabama. We hired a local caterer to feed our crew. The chow was absolutely delicious, consistently.

About 6 months later we were saddened to learn that the chef behind the magic had passed away. He couldn't have been over 55. We heard he had hypertension and diabetes and got caught in the crossfire between the two conditions.

Though thinking back to some of those dinners, I can't bring myself to suggest that he had the wrong approach.

can't beat my wife's cooking, her garden to table fruits and veggies, and she was born here.
the only familiar thing on bob's list are the pinto beans.

as the texan once said about northerners, 'they are like hemorrhoids, tolerable if they come down but don't stay to long'.

    G'day Northerners,
You are all Northerners from where I'm standing.
Unless we can change the maps and pole-names, of course.

Chatswood is 33.8 degrees South. OK I'm impressed but wondering if another member could beat that.

Don't recall any shout outs from South Pole Station.

No. Since I detached my quadriceps tendon*, I have difficulty getting up from laying down. I sleep on the couch.

*they did reattach it, so I don't fall over.

It may be that Jimbo@16 provides an incomplete list of good-thing doing.

Achilles was not wrong. Tendon injuries are the worst, and few readers would care to explore details related to human vascularization. Suffice it to say that evolutionary ecology has not prepared us to live so much longer than hunter gatherers.

I was carrying a chair down a flight of stairs and a chair leg caught in the bannister , and it rotated me into a position I did not recover from. I had bruises on my ribs from the chair, a detached quadriceps tendon, broken tailbone, and a dislocated shoulder. You can't put your butt in a sling, but you can have the tendon reattached to your knee cap.

I often think that is one reason we are having so much cancer, we are not dying of other causes, so we get cancer which we are not resistant to, not having been as long lived previously as we are now .
