I don't think there is an old red sticker, is there?

    Nope;).

They are all the same. If the owner waited too apply, they get the red sticker:).

Sometimes it pays to wait (y).

Call Caltrans and I’m sure they can do a better job of explaining .

But it’s not based on when the car was built but when the application was submitted;).

Yes. The version with a switch has been used in LA for quite a while, but only fairly recently in the SF Bay Area. The old ones without a switch are interpreted as switch set to 1. The rational for the new ones is that while formerly, if the travel was free for two or more passengers, you had to prevent the transponder from being read, with the mylar jacket. Now, they have situations where it is not free for two or more, but perhaps a reduced fee. Thus, you need the transponder with the switch to say you should be charged the reduced fee. And even where it is free for two or more, a transponder set to 2 will be read, but not billed, so you don't have to block the transponder any more.

That sounds interesting. Here in San Diego, I just leave my transponder in the mylar bag all of the time. If I take a toll road and I think of it, I take it out of the bag. If not, they have devices that read your license plate and bill you that way. And if somehow they couldn't read it and didn't have my plates, then they couldn't ticket me, anyway. I do it this way because then I'll never get billed when I shouldn't on the I-15 express lanes. I think the only real toll road in the county is the 125, so I'm rarely in a situation where it's billed, anyway.

Apparently they just presume anyone traveling the I-15 express lanes without a transponder is a carpool. I found out recently that my cousin drove those express lanes back and forth to work for over a year (basically every weekday) with no transponder, no passengers (by himself) and with no decals. He has a Prius and was able to drive them that long before he was pulled over. So I guess that worked out to less than a dollar for each trip. I don't support that, but it shows you how lax the enforcement is. Perhaps he was able to get away with it for so long because he drives a Prius (an obvious hybrid that cops see a lot of in the HOV lanes).

Here in San Francisco bay area, I carry the transponder with me but the toll road sensor never sensed it. I was charged several times but money was refunded after I filed a dispute.

I guess the cameras on the toll road grabbed my license plate and found out the plugin status so most of the time I am not charged.

The new ones have a switch called "Fastrak Flex".

    Per CARB:

"New Clean Air Vehicle Decals. Per Assembly Bill 544, a new program will begin on January 1, 2019 that extends the Clean Air Vehicle Decal program and allows those with a Clean Air Vehicle Decal issued from January 1, 2017 - December 31, 2018, to apply for a new Clean Air Vehicle Decal that will expire on January 1, 2022. There are income requirements and other details regarding this new program, which can be found at: California’s Clean Air Decals | California Air Resources Board."

While I hope you get taken care of, sounds like they want to make us reapply after Jan 1, 2019. So we won't have access for the waiting period while they reissue the decals. If you ask for replacement stickers aren't you supposed to send them the remnants of your current sticker?

I don’t think you need to send in your old decal. It will expire on 1/1/2019. It will be reasonable to accept the re-application before old one expires. My guess is we will get a red decal so all the red decal expires on the same date. Like old web site said red decal will expire as the green and white one. Now they change till 1/1/2022 which makes more sense.

While it's just speculation on my part, if you need a replacement currently, before 1/1/2019, you'd need to send in you current ones or what is left according to the website, or explain why its missing. I agree, I doubt after 1/1/2019 you'd need to send green or white back in since they are technically useless at that point.

Here's hoping he gets the new ones!

Has anyone been successful to get a red replacement sticker for their 2017 or 2018 green or white sticker?
I'm contemplating getting a certified pre-own Prime that has a Green sticker from 2017

You can just wait for another month or so until I get the paperwork back from DMV. By then you'll know if my sticker is extended to 2022 or I have to reapply in 2019.

...that is because the new HOV law (is a little unfair) only looks at the sticker issue data. In some cases the dealer had pre-applied for HOV sticker in late 2016 so some of those Prime owners are in trouble.

You are *probably* OK if your sticker was issued after 1-Jan-2017. In that case you can apply for a new red sticker. A few Prime pruchasers even as late as March_2018 the dealer had pre-applied older 2016 stickers to 2017 model year vehicles...those are the few folks in trouble losing HOV in a few months. Some here on Prius Chat.

An older PiP or other qulaified plug-in that *never* had HOV stickers before, still qualifies to apply for the new Red stickers.

    >>So if your 2017 Model Year Prime came with pre-applied HOV green stickers at the dealer, you need to see if you are safe or sorry. So far I have not heard about any Prime owners who self-applied for HOV stickers having this problem, as most of them had to wait to Feb-2017 to get their stickers from the DMV.

Did you have any luck getting a replacement Red Decal?

I have a green decal and just received a mostly prefilled REG-1000 form (request for replacement decal) from the DMV. I filled in the missing details (driver license number, etc), signed, and mailed back with my (second) $22 decal fee.

Assume everyone will be getting theirs soon.

If it's the same shape, why not just place on top of the old decal? Similar to the license plate's year decal.
