Nothing happens when I push the power on button. There is no voltage at the 12volt jumper point in the fuse area. So i connected my 12v charger to the jumper point and my charger will not come on. (Charger is computer controller and will only come on when it senses a battery). So the charger is sensing an open circuit between the charge point and the battery. What do I do next to see where the open circuit is? Is there a fuse that might be open?

My wife and I are in our upper 80's and are living on a very limited fixed income and it will work a hardship on us if we have to take ti to the dealer

Thanks to anybody who can help me.

    Jim

So this means that you have a voltmeter AND a charger.

Others here can help you find the actual battery for your model so you can check the voltage of the battery and the integrity of the main cable connections there. Let's hope that the connections are just loose; that happens often.

You can also charge the battery right at the posts.......and if the battery is old and sick, maybe an overnight charge will get you to a dealer or auto parts store to get a new one. Call ahead to be sure they have one that will fit.

You tube videos will show you how to access the 12 volt battery in the right rear of the car... OR you can just start pulling stuff out of the back of the car and you'll find it.... You need to hook your charger up directly to the 12 volt battery... I'm sort of near you in Olympia, let me know if I can help more?

Have you looked at the battery cables in the back? Maybe one is loose or off. There is also a fuse in the positive connector.

By the way I replaced the battery shortly after buying this car about four years ago as the original 12V battery was 8 years old. This car has 86,000 miles on it.

If you have the manual, check page 393 and the section starting at 413. If you don't have the manual, click here to download from Toyota.

Thanks for your reply. i did make a comment after you replied that i replaced the battery about 4 years ago. The problem is since then I am pretty crippled up and don't do crawl around any more...haha.. Thank you so much for your offer of help. If you lived in Longview I would probably take you up on that. I'm thinking there must be a fuse open somewhere between the jump point and the battery.

Page 430 & 431 in the manual. This is the top of the positive terminal. Fuse 50 (120A) is the main fuse.

Here is a picture under the red cover on top of the battery

Seems like I remember a fuse being there at the battery when I replaced it a few years ago. Looks like I am going to have to find somebody to do some crawling around in the back for me as I can no longer do that anymore and I was afraid that is what it was going to come down to.

I do have a manual on my computer but yours and mine must be different as I when I go to the page number it is way off from anything related to what we are talking about...haha...

Hopefully it is just a loose cable/clamp; figuring out what blew a 120A fusible link...
(That red cover can be a bit of a pain to get off)

Maybe a revised one online? The battery and fuses show up in three different sections in the owner's manual.
    Specifications
    DO−IT−YOURSELF MAINTENANCE Section 8-1
    DO−IT−YOURSELF MAINTENANCE Section 8-3
    SPECIFICATIONS Section 9

Thanks so much for the pictures The other thing about being 86 years old is my memory is failing that is why when you said something about at fuse at the battery it kind of rang a bell...haha...

I am going to see if I can find a neighbor to help me some.

    I will be back...

Thanks for all of the help!

i fell asleep dreaming about fixing my Prius and my wife came to my office and woke me up and I awoke suddenly and knocked a 32 oz Dr Pepper on the floor and made a terrible mess. If it isn't one thing it is another...haha..

I use a “jump pack”—a small lithium battery pack to jump my cars when needed. They are $50-60 in stores, but cheaper online. Some of them also have circuitry to detect a battery, but cheaper ones may not.

If it IS blown that likely is not the only problem.....because that "fusible link" is very large and would indicate a serious electrical problem if actually "blown". And could be dangerous to replace too.

It is much more likely that the cables are loose.
OR that your 4 year old battery has failed.

Given your situation, I think you are going to have to get a tow to a shop.......or find a "mobile auto technician" to make a house call.
Or maybe a good neighbor with a voltmeter.

I might be making a trip to the Junk Yard in Vancouver, Washington to get some Prius parts in next week or so... Let us know how the repair work goes via your help, maybe I can help once you have a better sense of what's wrong?
