Is it true that the only way to get Sirius XM on a Gen 3 is to give up AM reception? I notice that the heading over the AM is "AM Satellite," so that makes me wonder. Apologies if this is a really stupid question,

    I am not sure.

We had the 30-day trial of Sirius XM when we bought our Gen-3, but I do not recall if you push the button once for AM and twice for XM, or what.

We found the overall spotty reception really annoying though.

The same thing when we got our Prime a few years later. It can not play a single song all the way through without dropping signal. I just can't put up with that.

    No. My 2012 has both.
Your 2010-II (I had that version for several years) did not come equipped with Satellite radio, it had to be added separately. Once added, I'm not sure just how the controls worked, as I didn't add it.

The 2010 brochure shows that Trim II was 'satellite capable', but not 'integrated'. Trims III and higher had it 'integrated'.

The overall impression I am getting is that Sirius XM would work better on a newer Prius, and I assume that the Prius 4 has the "integrated" capability that you cite for the 2010 trim 3 and above. Thank you for your research, in particular for being willing to go back to the 2010 brochure.

My 2012 has both. You could do one of those setups where you stick a Sirius antenna on the roof and the control on the dash. Lots of people do that. It works.

If you don't have a touch screen radio you can upgrade to a 57032 for a non JBL car and if you don't have a XM antenna you can add one. I did this setup in my 2012 two that didn't have XM or navigation. I added both a GPS antenna inside my dash and a external XM antenna to the top corner of the hatch back. Total cost was about 250 bucks. Others may recommend a head unit replacement. I decided to stick with factory.
