Hey guys! We just put down our deposit on a 2006 Seaside Pearl package #3 that should be coming in within 4 weeks and I've got some questions. Here are the specs they showed:

    Exterior Color: Seaside Pearl
    Interior Color: Beige
Package #3 Includes Rear Backup Camera
The Extra Mile Option Package B - all the stuff we don't need
Leather Interior Upgrade - not our preferred interior
Vehicle Shield Package - is this like the undercoating deal Putty tries to sell Jerry Seinfeld?
Molded Dash Applique - and this is??

    1) We live in Austin and visited 3 nearby dealerships. The only one that didn't say there was either a year or 6 month wait for a Prius was Charles Maund Toyota. We talked with a real nice guy there that said they get Prii in every 3 weeks or so. He took our name and number down and told us he'd call us when a Prius that matches about what we want comes in. Well, a little more than a week later, he called and said there was a Seaside Pearl with a package #3 coming in. I immediately went down to claim it as ours. He said that most of the Prii that come in are package #6 or up, which is why we jumped on the #3. Is this the way it goes with most places?

    2) It's got extra options that we really don't need. How much could we force them to take off/is dealer installed? From the looks of it, all the options are a PIO (Port Installed Option)? Does this mean that they can't change it at all and have to take it as it comes or is there added stuff they tack on after they receive it?

    3) What the heck is the "Molded Dash Applique"?? I've searched everywhere for a description or a picture of it, but can't find anything other than after-market stuff. The exact description is: "W1 - Molded Dash Applique" and it's $279 that we'd like to keep in our pocket. The only article I found here didn't really describe what it is. PLEASE tell me it's not the wood-grain look and if it is, we can fight with them to not install it. My wife and I weren't really a fan of the leather, but we're really not a fan of the wood-grain dash.

Besides some questions, we're extremely excited!! :D

    Thanks!!!

Sounds like a wood grain dash kit to me. I sure would be talking to the dealer about the add ons before you take delivery. The undercoating is really not needed unless you live where you get a lot of snow and ice during the winter months. Extra milage B package?, you got me there bud, but would not be looking for that one either. Well good luck.

    Happy Motoring!

That's some of the more creative efforts that I've seen yet to get over MSRP. And I thought "Toyo Guard" and $200 floor mats were bad. One would think that Toyota Corporate would be a little classier and not allow things to get to this point. At the rate things are going some of these dealers could eat up the whole tax credit with this $#%^#@.

There's not a danged thing you can do about all the add-ons, except wait for a different car. All the Toyota dealerships in this part of the country are run by Gulf States Toyota, one of two independent distributors in the nation (not owned by Toyota USA). They put on all this crap to boost their profit margins - "undercoating", "appliques", etc etc etc, and the dealerships have to take it, unless they have a specific order for specific options. They really don't make a whole lot of money on the Prius itself, so they load them up with crap. It only took seven weeks for us to get our Pkg 4 with exactly the options we wanted (YMMV); yes, we had to go with our second-choice color, but I think we'll actually be happier with it. You can get the individual pieces out of the "Extra Mile$$" package or whatever - we got the mudguards, rear bumper protector, HomeLink auto-dimming mirror, cargo net, and floor/hatch mats as the only add-ons we wanted or paid for.

We worked with David Shoemaker at Classic Toyota in Round Rock - he's one of the best no-nonsense guys I've ever dealt with (and I've bought nine (ten?) new cars over the last thirty years). Straight MSRP, but don't expect the used car guys to play fair AT ALL if you have a trade-in - they know they don't have to on a Prius deal.

    Hi Jason,
We also live in the Austin area. We should recieve our 2006 the last week of August. If you can wait you can get exactly what you want. Many dealers will offer you these packages simply because they make more money on it. What I have been told is the only option that is factory installed are the side air bags and curtains. Everything else is installed after it arrives in the states. So we ordered ours with package 1 only, then added the security rs3200 Plus sercurity system and reap bumper protector. We are also adding leather seats and window tinting. If it arrives on time we will have waited for ~6 wks to get exactly what we want. We also had dealers trying to say it could take up to 1 year to order exactly what we wanted. And even had the dealer in San Marcos try to charge us on 1,000 over MSRP because we were internet customers. They normally charge 2,000. After doing a quick internet search we found MetroPlex Toyota in Duncanville. Which is a little south of Dallas/Fortworth. They a slightly below MSRP and are getting us exactly what we want. There are certainly a very wide range of dealers out there but like other have said if you look you can find a good one.
I doubt if you will any luck having them "remove" anything. But who knows?

Aww man, Nobody replying? I'm going to talk with the dealership and ask them, but wanted to get as many facts as I can from here first. Does anyone know what the "Molded Dash Applique" is? For the life of me, I can't find anything.

    Thanks!

It's a pretty safe bet that if you haven't had a response in this long, nobody knows for sure what it is. People around here aren't shy about expostulating on things they know about (and many things they don't, too (yes, I include myself in that :p )).

My guess? Marketing guy at Gulf States Toyota: "Hey, let's put this as an add-on - it's a magical invisible dash applique - it's so good you can't even tell it's there! Har har har!"

First post...my Mag Gray Pkg. 3 is due to arrive any day now.
I think I may have an answer to the "Molded Dashboard Applique" question.
We were lied to, price gouged, and received the general runaround from almost every dealer in the Dallas area. That's another story, for another thread...anyway, we finally were treated right at Metroplex Toyota as well (which, ironically is the dealer closest to me).
We walked away from an available car at another dealer over $800 worth of Gulf States Toyota pack on items. The 'molded dashboard applique' was on the addon list. I asked the salesman what it was, and he said it was a 'special dashboard treatment', and pulled a bottle of something out of the glove box. I told him I wouldn't pay $279 dollars for them to ArmourAll the dash.
When I ordered my car from Metroplex Toyota, I asked them what it really was. The saleslady told me it was the artificial wood trim on the center console. The car I had test driven didn't even have that on it, yet they were charging for it.
I'm getting exactly what I requested from Metroplex. Pkg. 3, mud guards, floormats, leather, and window tint for $200 off msrp. It's been exactly 3 weeks since I put my request in, and the car is due at the dealership this week.
