SKS, Ebay Keys and Techstream

    What is the current state of knowledge regarding used key fobs with a Gen II with SKS?

    I have an original key that works fine with SKS. The extra key I bought on Ebay works to start the car, after following the "chicken dance" procedure, but it doesn't work with SKS. I have Toyota Techstream - can I use that to register the non-virgin key? So far I've tried and failed, but maybe I'm going to the wrong place in the software.

    You need to make sure you bought a NEW SKS fob and not a used or non-SKS version. Also, is the fob a genuine new one and not a knock off? I, unknowingly, bought a knockoff from Amazon for my Suzuki and it wouldn't pair. Finally, the car will only pair with 5 FOB's total before it needs a full reset so that might be a possibility too.

    A used key requires a “seed” value that only a dealer or professional locksmith can get from TIS. Phone around to local locksmiths and see if one has a reasonable price! And get them to cut the mechanical key.

    You will learn and understand why used SKS fobs will NEVER work properly, except on the original vehicle the used SKS fob came from.


    You need a Vehicle Security Credential to access that function in Techstream. Also, it is unlikely a non-genuine copy of Techstream will work properly for the Reset/ReSeed of SKS fobs.

    Access to vehicle security information is provided for security professionals registered with the NASTF Vehicle Security Professional Registry.
    NASTF Vehicle Security Professional (VSP) Registry Main Page - National Automotive Service Task Force

    Intervention by a Dealer or Auto Locksmith with Security Credential is required. Price shop this service w/ dealers and auto locksmiths. Inquire w/ Luscious Garage (SF) and Art's Automotive (Berkely); since Menlo Park is 'relatively' close.

    In the future, buy a NEW (100% virgin) SKS Fob if you want to retain SKS functionality.

    Thanks everyone. Just checking before I order a new virgin key. I'll call this one a $60 mistake and consider it an emergency key - no SKS, but an option if absolutely needed.
