mechanical breakdown coverage instead of extend warranty?

    You'll probably have to post some more specifics, as i'm sure many (if not most) aren't aware of what this "mechanical breakdown coverage" from geico is.

    mean-boy- From what I know, Geico's mechanical breakdown coverage is only available to their auto policy holders. I've also been looking into this, since I currently have Geico auto insurance. At a glance, the coverage looks very similar to other extended warranty platinum plans I've seen, and perhaps better, since there are no large up front costs... or confusing parts lists.

    I was quoted $34.70 every six months for my 2006 Prius (package 3). The repair/claim deductible is a little high ($250.), but given the extremely low up front costs, I think it's well worth the trade-off. I can also wait up to 15 months or 15k miles (which ever comes first), before I have to add it to my policy.

    How it works, according to their mechanical breakdown claims department: If your vehicle needs repairing, you can take it a mechanic of your choice (at least in Florida). Like most other extended warranty plans require, they (Geico) should be called for approval before repairs are done. Repairs are paid for over the phone with Geico's credit card, so I don't have to front the repair cost. I simply write a check for the deductible.

    I was also told that minus the usual wear/tear exclusions (listed at their website), this breakdown coverage includes everything that is on the vehicle at the time that it was manufactured... including computerized items such as the navigation system.

    I'd be curious to know what other people find about this coverage. People should also be aware that I was speaking with a Geico rep from their Florida service department, so it's possible that the terms may differ from state to state.
