So I've noticed that whenever I walk by my prius with the fob in my pocket, there's a buzz from the engine compartment as if something was getting loaded into position.

Does anyone know what its doing at that point? And why does it need to be done when I walk past the car, and not wait until I'm seated inside and pushing the start button?

It is simply the electronics in the car anticipating you getting in the car and preparing to get driven. The brakes precharge, among other things. The fob works via near field communication. The car senses your presence, and is working to be ready to drive away.

BTW, the interior lights turn on when you walk near the car also.

I get that its prepping the car to be driven. I just don't know why it doesn't wait until the car is actual about to be driven. Seems a waste of energy to do this every time I walk out to get the mail.

    Don't you mind about that.

    Same here.

If you start the car entering from the passenger door, the whirling sound starts then car is ready.

It was! I just made a slight adjustment of "mind about the future" to "mind about that" so it would make more sense in the conversation's context....

Thank you for finding that! I was able to find lots of other clips from the 1973, but not that one, for whatever reason. It wasn't for lack of searching.
