Hi PriusChat, long time no post! So I recently moved to Carmel, IN and I was driving home from Lowe’s and one of the cells in the battery pack died and the car jerked because I was driving. Had no clue what had happened so I pulled over into a parking lot and used Google to see what happened. So I thought since I’m 5 minutes from home I can just use the gas motor to get me home and I will post this on PriusChat. Now I start work for T-Mobile a week from Labor Day, and this is my mom’s car and she retired this year so she won’t be driving much since my sister also lives in Carmel. My question is how much will it cost at the dealer to get a new pack? Or should I attempt to replace the whole thing myself?

    Thanks PriusChat!!

dealers average around 3k. some less, some more. if you feel up to it, see the install threads here and call around for pack availability and pricing.

No, unfortunately it isn’t under manufacture warranty. Also when I was close to Madison when we lived in Chicago but my mom and I both moved to Carmel from Chicago. Carmel is 10 minutes north of Indianapolis.

You could always check with Steve at Auto be yours in Seymour, IN. While it’s probably about 60 or so miles away, you could always call him to discuss your situation.

Have you had the car checked for codes? If not, it sounds like you're jumping to conclusions, after just a Google search.

Could be inverter too, for one. But first things first, get the codes read. The simplest is a dealership service department, with Techstream diagnostics, and you get quotes while you're there, once it's determined what's happening.

Raytheeagle- thanks for the info for Steve, I will give him a call on Tuesday.

Mendel Leisk- I have a ScanGauge 2, can I use that to get the codes?

It'll get some (I've used it thus), but I think a dealership diagnosis with Techstream is the way to go, with $1000's at at stake. They may do it gratis, or at most $100.

Try the ScanGuage first, see what it shows.

Mendel Leisk- Thank you I will see what codes I get with the ScanGauge

grid- I did a Google search. I'm not new to cars but I am new to hybrids, thus why I created this thread to get information from you all.

We took the car to the dealer on Tuesday to find out what happened. The inverter failed and they have to order it.

Bisco, isn't there a warranty extension out to 100K on the inverters?

Toyota extended the warranty for IPM failures to 15years with no mileage limit. Search under Toyota warranty extension ZE3.

I got the check hybrid system message about two weeks ago. Took it to my dealer and they quoted me $3600 complete with tax. Car has 127k miles. First issue I have had. Since it was at the dealer they did three recal updates. I reset it by removing the negative terminal. The following few days i decided to remove the hybrid battery. This is what I found. Not good guys. So I removed all of the nuts and copper bridge plates and cleaned them all. I purchased the Dr Prius app and a Bluetooth device. Tested it and this is what it said. Then I did the load test. Got this. Just today it failed and gave me the message. Called dealer and new battery pack arrives tomorrow at 8:00 AM. $2319.95 plus 6% tax. Done.
