That would be a personal decision but yes, the original product being modified to fit into the Prius Console as a Safe or Vault is a quick draw simplex firearm safe designed for compact and subcompact pistols or revolvers.

It just so happens that the vault will serve our purpose for locking up personal items we dont want other passengers or general theft to have access to.

    I like the idea too.

I would make a couple of general suggestions:

    a) Make it (or another model) big enough for a compact or full size handgun. Some folks might want to have a full size handgun, since it could very well be one that lives in the car only.* Might as well have the better accuracy and firepower. It would also be able to store something larger, like a wallet, jewelry, cash, important documents.

    b) Make it easy to mount. I think a lot of interest will be lost if it involves drilling through the frame and possibly undermining corrosion resistance of the car. If that kind of drilling is needed, provide a template and instructions on how to re-seal the plating or coating around the holes. Provide stainless steel hardware, if any of it will be exposed under the car.

    * So many places in my area have the "no guns" sign, (guns only for bad guys) the gun becomes carryable almost only in the car. In the south, I'm sure it's better, but in liberal IL and in conservative businesses?

    Ranger and Smaug,

There is a thread in the Accessory section with specific dimensions and updates.

Gen 4 Prius Center Console Vault or Safe | PriusChat

To answer you can really store whatever you like in the vault.

Mounting options are up to the user. I will be mounting horizontally through the console on both sides with 1/2 in pan head sidewalk bolts with low profile nylock nuts on the inside. No drilling the frame or into the electrical area under the console.

There may also be an option for cable attachment to a hard point if desired.

For those who choose to store a personal firearm the vault door will have a gas filled piston which automatically opens the vault door vertically with an option for a modular holster attachment. Largest would be in the G26/G27, PM9, LCR size.

I see. When someone says 'center console' I was thinking the one below the dash, not the one below the armwrest. (thus the comments on drilling through the floor or chassis.
