The HPS short arm filter kit is designed for the regular Gen 3 Prius. I have had it installed and used it in my 2012 Prius v for two years, now, with great performance and no issues.

I am posting this thread on the regular Gen 3 forum to get more viewing traffic.

Removing the entire resonator and filter box took longer than installing the new air intake.

The harness for the MAF sensor had to be released from the plastic hold down to be repositioned.

In two years of use, I've had no CEL or other issues. The front of the engine bay now appears cavernous.

Yes, we’ll, did you drop Your 1/4 mile time or did you get 10 more mpg?

Didn't notice and don't care about MPG and never timed the 1/4 mile. I did notice better acceleration.

Will this pass CA visual state inspections?

Don't know if it's carb certified probably not. But just swap it back for smog test.

Don't know. If you keep the OEM intake and filter box, it's about a half hour replace. In my opinion, it's worth the time.

It will probably pass the smog check, as is. But, it may not pass the visual check.

When I lived in California, I had a friend who did smog certifications. Whatever I drove passed.

I'm sure it breaths better around that mass air sensor. Pretty restricted on the Gen 2.

HPS did NOT certified the intake for California, probably because of COST, not that it would not likely pass.

How did you end up with a FE vehicle then?

As an engineer, I wanted to explore the technology.

I looked at other intakes including the ones made by Injen and those with a cold air box. The HPS is made of mandrel bent seamless aluminum and is well made with TIG welds, as well as a K&N filter.

It is a simple and clean installation with no need for new holes. I still have the OEM assembly and replacement is easy and nearly effortless.

And, at about $180 delivered, it was a "no brainer."

Sure it wouldn't pass looking at the engine compartment but tail pipe emissions would be fine if they ever tested them. I like how it's not legal to put fuel injection on a carborated vehicle because it's not what it had. Besides the fact it would be cleaner.

The pipe's diameter is 2-1/2 inches. The hose necks down to the same diameter as the Prius' air intake.

Gen 2 is 2 inches at the throttle body. I tried to utilize a ram intake that was 2 and a quarter roughly so maybe quarter inch bigger than stock to help that mass air area. Car pulled much harder but check engine light came on. Not any room on the Gen 2 for velocity change on that mass air sensor.

The old cliché, "There's a will; there's a way" holds true again,

It's ironic that that all these mods are developed, made and sold from California.

The space made available by the HPS intake makes an ideal location for the Ruen OIL CATCH CAN. occ installed Prius V 001.jpg

Ok, I'll bite: the object of this is to reduce air intake restriction? What does this accomplish? Besides being a bit noisier?

I appreciate it makes a LOT of room in there, for the access, and the oil can.
