Is there a "high point" in the cooling system? For air removal.

    I was installing an oil catch can today, and instead of removing the intake manifold, I opted to just worm my hand in behind it to get the tubes changed. Another tube, one that goes into the throttle body (see image in link below) was in the way, and looked like it was probably part of the EGR system, or some other gas recovery type thing, and I decided to pop it off. OOPS! coolant. I put it right back on , but I'm pretty sure I've introduced some air into the cooling system. How would I go about clearing this out, or should I just take it to my mechanic and pay him for 15-30 minutes of labor to bleed the air out?

    edit: as of this moment, I have yet to run the engine, car is sitting in the garage with the air intake off.

    He doesn't open the cooling system in that video. I don't think you understand what I'm talking about at all, or you didn't read my entire post. I have the oil catch can installed. that is not the problem. I'm concerned that I have introduced an air pocket into the cooling system. This is completely unrelated to installing the oil catch can, it just happens to be what I was doing at the time.

    he doesn't have a video on replacing the coolant and burping the system?

    It looks like, for the engine coolant at least, you just run the engine and the coolant will sort itself out. I imagine that the next time I hop on the freeway, the prolonged engine running would take care of it. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

    At least in our 2010 Prius hatchback, the highpoint in the engine coolant circuit is the hoses connecting into the top of the Exhuast Gas Recirculation cooler. There's actually a (white plastic) bleed bolt there. When I did our EGR circuit I purposely drained 2 liters at the outset (dropped the coolant level completely below the egr system, then when done added the coolant at the reservoir, while leaving that valve open and burping the hoses a bit as I poured. As of 2012 model year Toyota in their wisdom deleted the bleed bolt, but the hoses are still similar. I would think just disconnect the top hose there, and add coolant to the reservoir, burp the hoses, till fluid starts coming out, then quickly reconnect.

    See white cap and black junction. There's a spigot off the right side you can push tubing onto, or just work fast, close it quickly when coolant starts coming out:

    Meh,

    I’ve bled our 2010’s (and about a 1/2 dozen other Gen3 Prii) and never used the high point drain;).

    Toyota took it out as it isn’t needed:).

    I’d just turn the car on and have the engine coolant cap off ready to add some to the reservoir ;).

    So much for saving time by not removing the intake manifold :whistle:.

    I lost maybe an ounce of fluid, I'm not going to worry about topping off the reservoir for that much.
