    what do you mean
i thought the unit itself is a head unit?
if i take out the cd player in the 2006 basic, and install that, it would work right?

It's two seperate pieces. You have to buy a headunit (a standard or the video version) and then the cable. Alpine is uber expensive too.

Not to mention replacing your cd player with another one is going to look like crap.

I would check the cost of installing an Alpine plus the Full Speed, vs just the VAIS alone. It also appears you'll not have control via the steering wheel or MFD in any case.

he should. The controls have a standard protocol shared by all manufactures. Thank you, sony.

Well, that's good. It still seems to be a large investment. The Alpine CDA-9857 shown on the demo sells for at least $264, then add another $30 for the Full-Speed. You're close to a VAIS right there.

Actually, I have to correct you. The FullSpeed can work with the Apline VPA-B222 and the VPA-B111 (the second name may be incorrect). They use the FullSpeed and intigrate with the factory system, including the Prius NAV system. The only drawback is that they do not use the touchscreen and have an external controler, oh yeah, and the price.
