11" Infotainment Reboot - one confirmed cause

    Canadian model 2018, with latest 5530 firmware. The USB port of the prime is very very picky and finicky

    I can confirm one of many reasons the infotainment reboot is due to the specific USB drive.

    I previously used the Sandisk Ultrafit 32gb (the small little one) in the Prime without trouble. The stick was probably a year old. I then swapped to another USB drive (Kingston Data Traveller 32gb if you want to know) and has been using that for maybe a month.

    So I decided to listen to the music from the Ultrafit, and upon plugging it into the usb slot, it plays music for 2 seconds then rebooted. And it would keep rebooting upon the usb drive initiation. I thought it might be a file system, so I formatted the drive again on MacOS and reloaded all the songs in it. But same problem, the Ultrafit would reboot upon initiation. So I deleted my Kingston and reloaded all the songs into the Kingston drive, and tried that. It plays just fine.

    So I have pinpoint it to the Ultrafit Drive that was causing my specific reboot, but it worked fine before, and works fine on a computer.

    thx for sharing ,

    I have updated my system to 5530 recently and before that i never experienced any sort of reboot loop , but I did notice a problem with the USB port: system freeze for a couple of minutes , extremely slow to load files ... etc ..

    I have quite a collection of USB drives : 512 Mb , to 8gig , 16gig , 32 and 64 Gig of many brand .. i tried them all and my conclusion was that the Prime is capricious if bigger than 32gb , a bit picky with 16gb but would eat anything at 8gb and lower .. i guess i need to retry all my usb drives with Ver. 5530 now

    You can't just dump all the files in the USB. There are certain limits to the file system of the Toyota infotainment. I posted a thread before and someone responded. Try searching for that.

    Something like 999 folders or less and 256 files within a folder, etc. and forgot how many levels of folders hierarchy.

    If you dump a bunch of files in the USB then it will just read the files upon the limitation.

    Oh .. i never had so many files .. lol. Nop my test was like 50 songs in the same folder ..i tried the same files different USB drive .. it didn't like my Corsair 64Gb (3.0) very much ...it was slow ... but my Patriot 8.Gb ( 2.0 ) is significantly faster ... why ?? i don't know.

    The only logical guess is the system is very sensitive to any voltage draws and changes. I suspect the Ultrafit may be getting old and as the components wears down, it requires higher voltage that causes a system error and to protect itself it reboots.

    These things reboot for so many different reasons it seems. If I drive with an iPhone plugged in playing music, never touching it, it will reboot after 1-2 hours of straight driving and then reboot with more frequency. It's amazing to me that a car designed in a modern age like this can't handle normal devices like iPhones and even simple USB sticks.

    As bb4srv notes, there are limitations:

    Note that the manual says USB 2.0. My understanding is that USB 3.0 drives are supposed to be backward compatible but will be limited to USB 2.0 performance.

    I also have discovered that when you are using a large USB drive with very many folders, the Prime will not allow access to all of them while the vehicle is in motion (drive). The scrolling and the alpha key pad both appear to allows access to only a portion of the alphabet, say A to F for example, and says that the rest of the indexing will become available when the vehicle is stopped. I haven't played with this a lot. Maybe someone else can provide more detail on the what and how of this limitation.

    you'll need either use linux or a special utility to format a stick bigger than 32GB using FAT32. Window's won't do it. You also need to verify that you use the same cluster size... whatever that is, it may well be that when you formatted the 64GB you used a different cluster size than the 32GB stick (or if it came preformatted, who knows what it is).

    unfortunately Toyota didn't give ALL the requirement specs.

    I suspect a lot of the incompatibilities come from manufacturers just picking different defaults...

    Happens sometimes with my iPhone. It's really bad with voltage draws.
