About a week ago I turned on my 2009 Prius to find the A/C wasn't blowing. It's usually ice cold, but there was no air movement at all. The was a huge disappointment as its been upwards of 90 degrees for the last few months here in Georgia. I came back a few minutes later and turned the car on again and the A/C was back blowing and cold.

It worked fine up until a few days ago my girlfriend and I had taken a trip to TN for a music festival, and Saturday morning on the way to the event, upon turning the car on the A/C did not blow, but after going down the road a few minutes it came on. It worked fine the next day and all the way back to GA, about a four hour drive. I dropped my girlfriend of and walked in here house for a minute, came back on toe finish the journey and the A/C did not blow again. The issue has persisted until this morning, which it began last night.

As the A/C is cold when it does blow I don't believe this to be a cooling issue but an issue with the blower. Would the blower go in and out like that prior to going out completely? I've also read that the heat can cause the inverter to over heat and not engage the blower. any thoughts on troubleshooting steps? Or should I go ahead and purchase the blower, as I'm not sure how long I can survive in this Georgia heat.

    to recap:

A/C blows cold when it does
Air flow has been intermittently cutting out starting a week ago.

update: On the way home last night the A/C did not blow, nor did it when I got up to go to the gym this morning. After driving for a few minutes on my way to work, I shut off my car and turned it back on and the A/C began blowing and cold at that point. Any thoughts On what my be causing this would be helpful

    welcome!
could be a loose connection, or bad solder joint on the circuit board, or even the fan switch itself. only way to find out is a process of elimination.

blower motors do fail often, but also the blower regulator could be going south. you need to put a voltmeter across the blower while its malfunctioning to determine which is bad. change the blower speed with the MFD to verify the voltage increases with speed. it may not use 12V on max speed, some blowers only get 8 or 9V on full speed, but you should be able to verify your getting some power to the blower. sometimes if the blower is failing, if you give the fan a push it starts working again. but you got to remove it to test it

When the blower is not working, I suggest that you remove the lower glove compartment. Then remove the cabin air filter tray. Reach down to the blower fan and spin the fan with a hand. See if the blower will start up. If it does then you should feel comfortable replacing the blower will solve the problem.

If the blower will not start up even with some encouragement then it is possible that the blower resistor assembly (which is located in the air ducting downstream from the blower) has failed. You can buy a used unit on eBay.

thanks everyone! I'm going to take another look at it early in the week and if it seems to be the blower I'll get that replaced. It was working for about four days then two nights ago it failed and hasn't came back on since. From what I see replacing the blower motor is a simple fix

So based on this advice, I removed the glove compartment and cabin filter try and was able to get the fan to spin with my hand, started blowing right away. So I'll be ordering a new blower motor today and installing it next week. I'll probably just keep the glove box out to get it started that way until I replace the part as its still 90 degrees in Georgia in October for some reason. Thanks! I'll report back if that is the fix.

Hey I've had the same problem with my 2007 prius over the years, especially in summer (LA). AC won't turn on at all then may kick in after a few minutes or not all. I've got no error codes and read somewhere that possibly switching out the 12v battery could fix the issue. When it doesn't turn on I can hear a louder buzzing type type sound.

Did you find out how to fix it? I heard clearing the error codes can fix it but I don't have any in diagnostic mode.

Thanks and really appreciate any advice.
