    Good Afternoon All,

Please accept my apologies if this post is all over the place.

About two weeks ago, my wife was about to head to work when she showed me that the back window of her 4 month old Prius Prime was shattered. I don't know how it happened but 8 years ago, my 95 Lexus LS400 had its back window shattered in the same parking spot. Weird. I can only guess squirrels hate us and are taking rocks into trees and dropping them.

Thankfully, I had chosen a ZERO deductible with GEICO and rental coverage. I spent almost 3 hours on the phone between GEICO, Safelite, our local Toyota dealership and Enterprise that morning.

Basically, Safelite has had a very hard time finding a replacement back window for our Prime. 1st, they ordered a regular prius back window (against my warning with a dealer verified part number). Then, they ordered the lower back glass (wrong). I specifically verified the part number with them and they are still having problems finding a replacement glass. My local dealership outsources all their glass work to a 3rd party and GEICO warned me that I would have to pay for everything and submit the receipts for review and that they might not reimburse all the expenses. That said dealership told me there was only 1 rear hatch glass available for the whole Southeastern region.... great...

Anyway, my main concern is that the newfangled carbon fiber hatch has a bunch of crevices and that the glass folks will not be able to remove all the glass bits and our new car is going to have a rattling hatch.

Does anyone have access to the factory replacement procedures for the Prius Prime? We plan on keeping this car a long time and the thought of a potentially rattly and or leaky back hatch is worrying me.

Thanks for reading and I look forward to some input.

well I called toyota customer care and they were no help regarding specific replacement procedures for the Prime. Nor were they helpful in guiding me to someone who could assist me.

    Cest la vie

So sorry that happened. Damn squirrels. Even the front wind shield is hard to get right. I imagine the back will be a nightmare. Please keep us posted on this process. I have a feeling many will return to this post in the future.

I'm starting to think this car is cursed... not that I'm superstitious. Just that the AC did not work when i bought the car (AC line gasket was pinched at factory), then is august my wife runs over a nail (1st time in her life, shes 33) then the back window is busted in september, now front windshield needs replacement as of today. Not to mention the car has about 10 different dings from careless drivers and nuts falling from trees. this is why we cant have nice things.

Buy a Powerball ticket. You will win and be one of those people who are miserable because of it. And you are about out of windows on the car. Might as well cut the top off and have the 1st Prime convertible.

The procedures to remove and install the back door glass are in the Repair Manual for the Prius Prime, available by subscription to techinfo.toyota.com, under Vehicle Exterior: Window/Glass: Back Door Glass. There are detailed illustrations, and if the glass were undamaged, it supposedly could be reinstalled, though the spacers, moldings, adhesive dams, and collars (for the center stop light set) are non-reusable.

For part numbers, see the second image of Figure 67-08, Back Door Panel & Glass, in the parts catalog.

Does the OP have any enemies? That back window looks like a bomb went off! Unbelievable. Is this post real???
I think I would give up, and just buy an old beater to drive.

I know about the scarcity of anything Prime related in the southeast... I am curious what hit the rear window and where this parking space is and how this could have happened.

A rear window may need to be sourced from a different region (i.e. north east).

Wow, what a nightmare. I am really sorry for what happened to your PRIME x multiple times. This is the first post I've read about rear window replacement on PRIME. I knew it is hard to find a front windshield from my own experience. I imagine rear window is even harder. AND NOW you need both. I don't know why they don't make rear window laminated just like front, so in case of breakage, it will not shutter into million pieces. If it was still held as one piece, I am sure it makes cleaning much easier. What nuts tree do you have above your parking place? I can't imagine any nuts can break glass. Any way this could be case of malicious vandalism?

Please keep us posted of the outcome of you misfortune. Good luck.

wow, sad to hear that. When I got hit back in Sept of last year it took almost 2 months to get a replacement rear quarter panel. I'm SOOO glad I took the car to an "insurance certified" repair place otherwise they would have limited my rental to 30 days instead of the time to fix.

I'm guessing vandalism. Who is angry at the OP? I think you can rule out squirrels and trees.

I'd just be curious as to whether the OP is sure it's an act of nature and god OR is that parking spot in a particularly bad neighborhood? That so much looks like an act of vandalism in it's devastation. Hard to believe Chip or Dale could do that.

    Plus..

I would think the odds of that happening randomly would be astronomical.

My other question is....Is this parking spot underneath tree's?
In Fall, you do get falling limbs from trees.

    At the very least?
I'd stop parking in that parking spot.

Thanks for the sympathies everyone. Dealing with insurance and Safelite has been a pain, and its not over. I was driving out of the neighborhood yesterday when something fell and cracked the windshield. I do not know what it was but it happened at like 745AM. There was no inclement weather.

    To answer some questions,
    1. Vandalism/bad neighborhood/ beef against me? - NOPE. We live in a wonderful wooded and safe neighborhood. Mostly a bunch of retired academics and a few young families. Its unlikely that it was vandalism.

    2. Limb caused damage? The damage was not caused by a fallen tree limb since there was no fallen limb on or close to the vehicle.

    3. Park in a different spot? Well the car is parked right next to our house in the driveway. We do not have a garage, so that parking spot it the only one that is close enough to an electrical outlet so we can plug in the Prime.

    4. Tree Nuts? I think the trees we have that shade our driveway are Black Walnut or Bitternut Hickory. Those nuts falling have definitely dinged the vehicle (hood, roof).

The whole idea about buying this car was to save money (amazing deal from Balise Toyota of Warwick back in May) and to get my wife and 4yr old son in a safe modern vehicle since I see accidents on a daily basis.

    I'll keep y'all updated.

I feel terrible for you; I've had 3 flats on my Prime Advanced in a year and a half, yet like your car, my car is not to blame. In your situation, make sure to have a shop recommended by the insurance company perform all the repairs, and that they give you a lifetime warranty on repairs like my shop did.
Getting the parts will be their problem, and hopefully your insurance will cover a rental car.
For future protection, I'd recommend you get a mini car port "enclosure" to protect your car, as well as a video camera with storage capability, in case the "squirrel" happens to be a biped! Did you file a police report? Was there any foreign debris, like the so called "nut"? A coconut might bust your windshields, but I can't believe a walnut or small nut can do this. I've had good sized rocks hit my cars' windshields over the years, and only gotten a chip from the hit (65-70 mph). It might not be your nearby neighbors, but I think you've probably got a hater out there; let the cops know.

@omarg Is there any chance that something like a rock flew off another vehicle from the road?

Could be neighborhood kids and a freak accident. About 18 years ago when we were still kids my sister was up on a hill throwing rocks at me...she missed terrible, shattered the rear window in my grandfather's van.

It is possible that the glass had a defect in it too, but it is nearly impossible to prove one way or the other. Something would have had to hit it pretty hard though imo. Glass usually doesn't break so easily.

Walnut fruit is quite dense. I can see it cracking or breaking glass when falling from a tall tree. To save weight, manufacturers are likely using thinner glass.

Second looking into a car port.

Honestly, get a camera on the cars, motion activated, say Blink, wireless, motion or sound activated, free online storage, small and unobtrusive, buy 3, they just need to be in range of your wify,

It may not be vandalism. But I hate to tell you, beautiful neighborhoods with retired academics and a few young families are NOT immune to vandalism. All it takes is one person, to be a vandal.

I also don't think this observation precludes the possibility that it was a falling limb or some type of wooded canopy debris. The same breeze or wind that can let loose a limb to the observations of Issac Newton, can blow that limb out of eye shot of your vehicle.

Hmm...would this driveway be located in....

A wooded neighborhood that is likely to have falling limbs?

    Which leaves us at...

Once the squirrels turn on you....it can go nuts.

Limbs have fallen in our yard before, but due to the sharp impact in the glass and the fact that there was no limb anywhere near the vehicle leads me to believe it was not a limb.

I guess it could be vandalism but I think it is unlikely. We do not live in a heavily populated area.

    It is a mystery.
