I'm old school. I was fine with an ignition key, and no FOB at all in the past.
But it's no big deal to replace the FOB battery every year. I have it marked on the calendar.

    Oil change
    Rotate tires
    Replace filters
    New FOB battery
    Buy Pizza.
    :ROFLMAO:

Yes, I have 2 Fobs and 2 mechanical keys. Was that question for me?
And I never keep my FOB on the same key ring as my house keys. I don't want to lose everything all at once.

I am too. Unfortunately you don’t get that choice in many cars anymore.

    Correct!
New Priuses come with 2 keyfobs and inside those fobs are the metal keylets that will open the driver side door.
On G3 and above (and many other Toyota products) there is no 'slot' for the fob - it just has to be detectable by the car.....like in your pocket....in order to start the car, open the doors, etc.
When I got 'Goofy' I "lost" my other keyfob, forcing the company to get a third fob, which they placed into a "key vault" on the exterior of the car. This way, other people (maintenance folks, mostly) have access to my car when I'm not around.
Interestingly enough, my keyvault is often mistaken for a charging port by the uninitiated, but for very non-obvious reasons they do not give me a key to the keyvault possibly because they're afraid that I might make off with a bucket truck, or one of the manager's cars.

Not the smartest system either - but I'm not in charge of that.....;)

So how is it detectable by the car with a dead battery if there is no key slot? Do you have to hold it in a certain location or something?

I am not familiar with "slot" in Gen2. I don't think I had "slot" on my Gen3, and for sure I do not have "slot" on Prime (or Gen4). If the RFID chip is still intact, do you have to have it in a new case to fit into a "slot"? Or can you just place the chip in the slot somehow to start the car?

Yap, all you have to do is to "touch" the POWER button with key fob with dead battery.

I kind of like the idea of hiding a spare (battery-less) FOB in the car. I would sure hate to lose my main FOB, and be stranded somewhere.

It’s on page 138 of the 2006 owners manual. Have you ever owned a 2nd gen Prius?

No, my PRIUS experience started with 2015 Gen3. I have never been on board Gen2.

Ok that is why you have never heard of the key slot then. The OP says her fob is so mangled it won’t fit in the slot. Being as this is the Gen 2 forum the advice of trying to replace the outer case and see if the insides are still good would be the best advice. Holding the key to the button does not work on a Gen 2

Not having seen what "slot" on Gen2 looks like, I don't know the answer to this question, but I am just wondering if it requires a fob case to just test the inside RF chip is still functioning. If OP can just take out the inside chip, and place it in the "slot" to test it, and if car starts, OP does not have to wait for the outer case to be delivered to her, and drive the car.

I was able to find 2 OEM Toyota Fob options based on your model. You can narrow/filter the option by entering your VIN on the page. Here's the page for your reference 2007 Toyota Prius Lock Cylinder Set - Toyota Parts Deal

Remember, there are no bad dogs, just super tasty key fobs.

Actually you're kind of lucky the dog didn't swallow anything. Then you'd have a fob problem and potentially a huge Vet bill.

if replacing the case only be sure to transfer the little black "pill" it is NOT part of the computer board..
it is molded into the case. I tossed mine and had to dumpster dive to find the old case in the trash a few days later

    This is 4d70 transponder chip(06-09) or 4d65 transponder chip(04-05).
If someone need case replacement in La ca I can help(as well I can fix your remote, if it stop working or board have damage after unsecsessful case replacement). If you need repair of your remote you can ship it or bring it if you not gonna find another solution. As well, for my car(05 prius) i did make regular key with copied transporder from my sks remote. So, If i lost my key i can open and start my car with no issues, and it cost me like 12$
