I'm getting rattling again on start up, but only after the car has sat (4 hours+)after a 75 mile one way commute. In August, I had the following repaired. EGR Valve & gasket, New EGR pipe assembly, New PCV valve, Cleaned EGR cooler, new 12 volt battery. Last week the rattling came back with codes P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304 and the following was repaired: Checked head gasket again with no issues. Replaced the intake manifold, changed the air filter and cleaned the mass air flow sensor.

After the long commute, I dropped the car off if Toyota and they were able to hear the noise. They kept the car for a week, but could not duplicate the rattling during the week since the car never left the lot. They had a specialist from Toyota look at it and he recommended to do one of the following: Fuel rail or fuel injector replacement. He also said it could be an issue with the VVTi gear?

After the initial start up the car will rattle from sitting, but the car won't make the noise if I'm staying local.

Any suggestions or should I just have the fuel injectors replaced?
    Thanks again, Jim

251000. I drive about 800-900 miles per week. Car is serviced by dealer every 5000 miles. Synthetic oil is used with 1/2 quart needed in between oil changes.

    Tried an oil catch can:whistle:?

Now that the weather is getting cooler out, you probably have some lights that are condensing and then getting sucked in at startup:(.

If everything in the egr circuit is new and clean, something to consider (y).

I have looked into it, but I haven't had any luck with any area shop willing to do an oil catch can.

What type are lights would be condensing? Thanks

Condensation or gas would be the usual suspects ;).

At 251 k, does your Prius consume oil? When you check the oil, does it have a gas smell?

Every 10000 miles I do a synthetic oil change and use about 1/2 quart half way through before the next change. No smell to the oil.

You could also check the MAF and MAP sensors along with cleaning the throttle body as next steps.

    Then the catch can:).

Not sure how close you are to @Bay Stater , but he’s a good wrencher that might know someone (y).

I cleaned the MAF sensor, didn't know about the MAP sensor.

I'll try the MAP sensor and cleaning the throttle body and send an email to @Bay Stater.
    Thanks for the information

Since the manifold and egr circuit was cleaned/replaced, it should be good for a while even w/o catch can.
Can't be fuel line or filter related, commonly when ICE dies randomly, its driving uphill or in middle of traffic not related to EV kicking in.
Could be fuel injectors, a member had the same issue and replaced injectors and fixed this rattle. Buy the grey bottle of techron fuel injector cleaner and dump in the tank, it's $4.79 at walmart see if that helps first.

worn out VVT gismo will rattle on a new start, especially if oil drains from it after seating for a few hrs. maybe try heavier oil that will stay inside the VVT longer. check youtube on toyota VVT rattle and see if the same noise.

Head gasket was tested by Toyota. No issues. Plugs were changed 20K miles earlier.

Had the throttle body cleaned out on Monday. Was running fine all week after the cleaning, then it started up again. Unsure what I'm going to do next, because the initial rattle is not as strong as it had been.

Catch can would be my next step;).

Any mechanic can do the job:).

Show them the video on how to splice it in and you’ll be good to go(y).

Thanks Ray. I agree. What could I expect to pay on the average with a mechanic? Also, once installed how do I service the catch can?

Depends on how you install ;).

Most are installing them high and easier to service. I went low (under the intake manifold) as I wanted the true low spot and no potential back pressure on the check valve.

If you install high and bring all the parts, it should take under an hour, but if the mechanic isn’t familiar with the job, I could see it being a 2 hour task:cool:.

I just serviced mine today and found about 6 ounces in the can:

What did you do to ur Gen III Prius today????

Ive been doing some short trips around town recently for child running, so that’s probably why I caught more over these 10k miles;).

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

No changes to my schedule. Once I'm home from work the car normally sits for 8 hours before I head back out. Car was serviced on Monday morning. Today I started the car up and it started to rattle again but not as hard. Whats puzzling is that I put on 700 miles this week with no issues. Car probably hates weekends.
