I didn't get the car yet but am planning to. I have a pioneer avic z1 interface nav system from my current car. I want to know if I get the Prius without the factory nav. Can I install the Pioneer underneath the screen where the controls are and that little cubby hole is? Anyone done this in here?

BTW, I'm new here. I've searched the forum and couldn't find anything to match my question.
    Thanks ahead.

Hi Bill, from another. I don't have a direct answer for you, but you may want to dredge the Audio/Electronics forum for "computer". I believe I remember reading a thread about mounting a screen in a unit under the radio/disk player in the small compartment. It required modifying the plastic bin (as in sawing it out).

I have the OEM nav and it's pretty good, though updates are expensive. You get a lot more than just the nav with the OEM unit. The rather large POI (point of interest) database is connected to the maps, so looking up a Pizza Hut will find them for you and give you directions, or you can press a screen button and call through your Bluetooth phone to see if they are open. A slightly odd thing is to look up a destination by phone number. It's not perfect, but it's fully integrated.

Hey Bill, thanks for your reply. I will check it out. But I wanted to know if it's possible to remove the unit under the display and put a kit for a double din head unit like my Nav? Do they make kits for the Prius yet?

I don't have any links for you to see, but I know some have removed the radio and mounted one like the Pioneer. The screen, when out, will obscure the MFD. IIRC a custom wiring harness needed to be added.

So yes, you can get the Prius without the NAV and add a third-party system, but some will take more to install than others.
