Ran out of gas with one bar left. Did I damage the battery?

3pm still no update from the dealer. It can't take 6 hours to throw some gas in. I've had this sinking feeling all day that they're going to come up with something bogus and $$$$ that's somehow my fault. Car was perfectly fine when I dropped it off, and died within 10ft of me driving off. If it isn't gas, it has to be their fault...

You missed it. Reread Post #46; Another Walmart oil overfill, Toyota is hinting at new ICE | Page 3 | PriusChat
MORAL OF THE STORY: DO NOT OVERFILL THE ENGINE OIL.

    Post #46:
    UPDATE: 8/25/14

... Factory service rep there that morning and he helped them figure it out. Cleaned the throttle body, cleaned the MAF sensor and now he believed the only thing that needed to be done was replace the traction battery!

...He said while there is something to be said that the car traction battery has over 185k on it and is well used that the Service Manager had stated that had it not been for the Oil Overfill he was quite sure the Prius would be running today and the adjuster said he had to agree with that.

Do you still believe it wasn't the overfilled oil change?
    • Overfill caused TB & MAF to essentially not function properly, which affected then engine operation.
    • HV Battery possibly on its last legs, given years/mileage. The discharge over 10days probably didn't help.
    • Toyota Service mgr concludes oil overfill caused this horrible chain of events, ultimately resulting in death of the HV Battery. This conclusion likely came from the Toyota Factory Service Rep.

I get that you were talking about gasoline with the "one pip".

    Gasoline.

But reading this, I felt you were ALSO concerned about the state of the battery?

    I'm suspicious.
I still tend to think you ran out of gasoline.

From what I've read? You have to REALLY overfill the oil and when doing so, you'll get other symptoms like the engine smoking.
Plus the OP admits that he was low on gasoline and intended to fill up AFTER the oil change.

Unfortunately, if the OP didn't check the Oil Level before handing the vehicle back?
I doubt the dealership would admit they made that mistake, even if they did.

Gas fixed it. For all I know, it could have been the oil and they drained it/cleaned everything then just told me it was the gas. Partly my fault for coming in so low on fuel. If it hadn’t been for that I might could refute it.

Since you never checked or saw the dipstick yourself, you'll never really know.
I've never had it happen (Severely overfilled Oil ) but from what I've read, overfilled Oil can be bad, and can cause a vehicle to stall, BUT...if it's filled to the point the vehicle will stall? You'll also get other symptoms, most commonly the engine will smoke.

Seems more plausible since you admit that you were low on gasoline pulling into the dealership, that you simply ran out of gas. At least that's what I'm putting my hindsight, speculative, we'll never really know bet on.

I'd actually hope that was the scenario. I'd think running out of gas, less damaging than having the oil so full it causes the vehicle to stall. But in either case?
    You're probably good to go.

Moral of The Story: Don't hand your vehicle over to a service department, low on gasoline. Also, and I do this, check your Oil level after having an Oil Change.
I have never had the oil so overfilled it caused the vehicle to stall. BUT...I have had the oil overfilled on more than one occasion. I don't trust that dealerships will get it right.
