Turn Off Backup Beeper?

    Can anyone tell me how to shut off the annoying beeper when you are in Reverse? I've been told its purpose is to alert pedestrians that you are backing up in silent stealth mode. But you cannot hear it outside the car, and all of us inside the car find it really annoying.

    Interesting.

    My dealer said it's for the driver to remind them that pedestrians may not be able to hear the Prius when in Stealth.

    To tell the truth, it does cause me to be a bit more vigilant when I back up.

    By your dealer's logic, then the beeper really should also be activated when rolling FORWARD since you can remain in 'Stealth' mode up to about 30 mph.

    I'll take responsibility for being vigilant about running over pedestrians without this aural nagging.

    Just want to know how to shut it off!

    From Bill's 2004 Prius FAQ:

    How do I turn off that annoying beeping in reverse?

    1. Power on (not necessarily ready, IG-ON will do).
    2. Set Trip/ODO to ODO
    3. Power off.
    4. Power on to ready (brake on).
    5. Within 6 seconds, press and hold ODO for 10 seconds or more.
    6. WHILE STILL HOLDING ODO *after* 10 seconds, Shift from P to R, then back to P. Now release ODO.
    7. You'll see in the trip display "b on" or "b off".
    8. Press ODO to toggle.
    9. Now power off.

    The Repair manual page says, however, that if you disconnect the 12v battery, you may lose this change. Repair manual also isn't clear that you should be holding down ODO while shifting (or operating seatbelt if you wish to cancel seatbelt buzzers, driver or passenger, using similar steps replacing shifting w/ fastening seatbelts).

    FYI: the beep heard when the car is in reverse is only heard inside the car, not outside.

    Reverse Beep Instructions - Here they are.

    Hey guys,

    I was one of the first owners/users to successfully perform this. The repair manual from techinfo wasn't too clear on the steps, but I was able to figure it out eventually. Based on that, I wrote my own set of setps. I sent this to the Yahoo Groups as well as a few Toyota big wigs who were looking for clear instructions.

    I posted similar instructions to the 2004 Prius Yahoo Group a while back, but have updated here for clarity.

    Steps.

    1. Power on the car to IG-ON or READY. IG-ON will do for this purpose.
    2. Using the Trip/ODO button, set the Trip/ODO display to ODO (not Trip A or Trip B)
    3. Power off the car.
    4. Now power the car to READY (brake on). This is required so that step 6 works correctly.
    5. Within 6 seconds of powering on, press and hold the Trip/ODO button for 10 seconds or more.
    6. WHILE STILL HOLDING ODO *after* the 10 seconds, shift the "gear" selector from P to R, then back to P. Now release the Trip/ODO button.
    7. If the last step was successful, "b on" or "b off" should be displayed in the location where the Trip Odometer or Odometer is normally displayed. "b on" is beep on, and "b off" is beep off.
    8. Press Trip/ODO to toggle the mode.
    9. Now power the car off to exit the toggle mode.
    10. Power the car on to READY and confirm the reverse beep status by shifting to R. The beep should not be audible if "b off" was selected, and should be audible if "b on" was selected..

    Note: The Repair manual page states that if the the 12v battery is disconnected, the beep will reset to the default of on, and this procedure will need to be performed again. The repair manual also isn't clear that Trip/ODO should remain depressed while shifting.

    Additional Note: The driver and passenger seatbelt reminder chime can be disabled or enabled (respectively, defaults appear to be driver on and passenger off) using similar steps. Instead of shifting from P to R to P in step 6, simply buckle then unbuckle the appropriate seatbelt while continuing to depress the Trip/ODO button.

    on the other hand, if you can get your hands on a piezoelectric beeper... what used to be called "Sonalerts" a few decades ago, many of them run on 12-15v really well, and some put out a constant tone and some beep by themselves when you apply voltage.

    i suspect that tapping in to the backup light wire and siphoning off a few milliamps to this kind of beeper, then figuring out how to stick it under the rear bumper or whatever, will do the trick.

    when the dealer told me that the beeper only beeped inside the car to tell you that you were in reverse, i almost choked laughing.

    there's a bit of engineering for the books...., as in, "What Were They Thinking?!"

    how about a small speaker under the hood to broadcast "normal car" noises, like roaring engine or exhaust, when you step on the gas... just to warn pedestrians in front of you, too?

    Is this for real? I can't get it to work.... I've tried twenty times. Is it something about the timing, like, you have to release the button at exactly the same time as you go back to P?

    Ah, now I got it. You meant "Push the Park button after putting it in Reverse." I thought you meant "Put it in Reverse and then let it pop back to starting position." Maybe I'm dense.

    No more beeping!

    Yes, it would be good to include that info in the instructions. :idea: Push "P" to go into Park. I was confused too, and it took me three tries to succeed, but I am now much happier for this modification.

    Slim to none - it's your car.

    If the battery has been disconnected, however, the feature will be reset. You'll need to reset the function again.

    I wouldn't worry about it from that perspective.

    Does anyone know if these steps would work to turn off the beeper that goes off when you open the door while vehicle is on. Seems like it might work to just open the door while holding the odo button. I could try it but I'm sitting out a storm while my happy lil Prius sits it out in my newly emptied out garage. I really am getting just too Ward Cleaver. If they only knew. hehehe

    Backup beeper off, unable to turn off seatbelt beep.

    Did anyone else try to turn off the seatbelt beep? I did, and although I changed it from b-on, to b-off, the car still beeps if I don't wear a seatbelt. Any ideas?
