Cross-post: keep 06 one owner Prius 82k Miles or swap for Brother’s 12 Prius C with 130k miles?

    We recently purchased an ‘06. It’s in good shape, and the hybrid battery checks out with Dr Prius and other apps using OBD. I also had an ASE mechanic with good hybrid experience inspect it at purchase. The prior one-owner had all service done at their dealer and I have all receipts.

    My brother’s has more miles; he has also taken good care of it. He purchased a Tesla.

    I’ve driven both. The 06 has a nicer ride, interior, etc. Road noise is pretty similar. The C gets about 8 mpg better. I’m familiar with the typical failure items on the 06. Less so on the C.

    What do you like about your C? What do you not like? What are the common failure issues? Which would you pick and why? I can get a good deal on the C; better than market price.

    All things equal, I expect to need a new hybrid battery in the 06 before I would need one in the C.

    I’d love to have both; but don’t need both.

    One of the more common failure items on the C would be the door lock actuators. But that's not a C thing, that's a Toyota line thing. Same actuators in the majority of Toyota fleet, including 4 runner and Lexus cars.

    Thanks. - what is the reliability of the inverter pump, brake actuator, combination meter? Those are common wear items on the ‘06. My inverter pump was already replaced.

    I'm at 107k miles and the only things I've changed are the drivers and passengers door lock actuators and the front and rear wiper washer squirter motors.
    I haven't heard of anything else being an issue, except some folks have had bad luck with the battery. But that's still pretty rare. Shoot, I'm still on my factory 12v battery from 2012.

    Cross - post. Ok - so I’m testing out my brother’s ‘12 Prius C against our ‘06 Gen 2. Will decide in about a week. Initial MPG figures are quite a bit better on the C at 56 MPG vs 43 typical for our ‘06. Freeway noise is actually fairly similar. Visibility is better on the ‘06 for sure.

    Result: the driving position of the C makes it difficult for my wife to see as well as she does on the ‘06. Looks like we will be keeping the 06. Thanks to you all for your feedback!
