    I just received an email from HYUNDAI AUSTRALIA - I'd clicked on the "Let Me Know" box about 6(?) months ago - the email says "The IONIQ arrives soon. Welcome to the future of mobility - We will keep you updated on all IONIQ news." Not sure when "SOON" is?

    But they indicate all 3 versions are coming - not sure if concurrently, or staged?

    My parents just picked up a 2019 Hyundai Ioniq plug-in hybrid yesterday. Outside of the non-plug in Ioniqs, the others have been hard to find for months and out of stock until now.

    My dad retired this year and they had two ICE vehicles to that point. They really only need one car now so they sold one of the old vehicles when he retired and will sell the other ICE vehicle soon.

    The Ioniq plug-in hybrid works well for them- Almost 30 miles AER takes care of all of their around town driving and the Prius-like ICE efficiency and convenience is there for their long trips.

    Yes, full hatch with back seats that fold down flat and level and a real 5th seat.

    They got the higher of the two trims (the "limited" trim) and paid $29,500 pre-tax – “total price” (including the $885 freight & handling fee). They will get a $4,543 federal tax credit, $1,500 CA clean vehicle rebate, and a $300 local utility rebate - so $23,157 before tax.

    Their local utility also offers a $500 local rebate if they get a level 2 charging station. Of course they get HOV stickers as well.

    -leather seating and steering wheel
    -paddle shifters
    -heated front seats
    -power driver's seat with memory
    -Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

    I guess every car maker is breaking into the handicap market as that is by definition the mobility market.


    That said I like the Ioniq, I just loath people telling me they have a mobility solution

    I found this thread quite fascinating. As a Prius owner of 12 years (1 Gen 2 and 2 Gen 3 - all Prius 3 models), I've been a big fan of Toyota hybrids, and decided I was in the market this year for a Gen 4. I have not been all that keen on the Get 4 interior, but like the origami exterior, particularly in black.

    I was disappointed to see that Toyota have, not for the first time, moved features I like and want from the model I can afford to one I can't (GPS for example), but decided I could live with single-door keyless entry and lack of CarPlay compatibility. Then I read some of the posts here about the Ioniq, and went to a dealer to look at one.....

    This Hyundai is more refined, smoother, handles more precisely, and is significantly quieter on the road. It also has better levels of equipment and a much lower entry price, so I traded the 2014 Prius, and bought one. It returns a pretty reliable 58mpg on my daily commute where the Prius managed 54 and I'm impressed (so far) with the Ioniq's comfort and driving experience.

    That isn't to knock the Prius at all, just to acknowledge that Hyundai have been playing catchup pretty well, and brought Prius fuel efficiency down in price to a far more affordable entry point. And one that doesn't skimp on features.

    They are. But Hyundai only puts a few on the shelf occasionally. Not even stocking them as deep as was the case of the 2012-15 Plug-in Prius. Just not gouging on them at this point like the Kona EV.

    The Ioniq is a little bland in appearance, for sure. And of course the current Prius is anything but. On the other hand, the interior of the Prius is a bit cartoonish, and when driving a car it's the interior that is the most immediate factor in the vehicle's styling, not the exterior. In that regard, the Ioniq's interior styling is rather easier to live with. My opinion of course.

    Ultimately though, I really don't consider the styling of a vehicle to be all that important, and certainly not when there is such a night-and-day difference in features, equipment and cost as there is between these two models.

    That said, if I could have had a Prius with the Ioniq's feature list for a similar price, I'd very likely have stuck with the Prius, simply because the devil I know is better than the one I don't. However, Toyota didn't want to sell me a Prius with the same spec for anything like the price.

    agreed. toyota is living off reliable reputation. tough for anyone to top that, so they have to add other features and benefits.

    Amongst the most envied reliability reputation in the industry, and certainly hard to beat on those terms, though on the basis of features, Hyundai must think they have at least begun to level the playing field.

    I do know that I see quite a few various Prius models being driven where I live and work, and have only actually spotted one Ioniq on the street other than mine. It may be a very unreliable guide to popularity, but it looks like Toyota is still the winner. That said however, my Ioniq SEL cost me a great deal less than a similarly equipped Prius, which really meant my choice was between the Ioniq, or remaining with my 2014 Prius 3, because I couldn't justify the extra money to buy a new one with less kit on it than I already had.

    In the end, the competition in this sector of the market can't be anything but a good thing for the consumer.
