    hey!

my 2010 prius head gasket went bad and after shopping around Im thinking an engine replacement would be the best option.

My question is, would a 2012 - 2015 prius engine fit my 2010 prius and work with no Check engine light, electrical problems?

also If anyone here is in the Sacramento Area and has an good low mile engine?
and if y'all know any shops that are realiable @ a good price? (so far getting quoted $750 labor for complete swap)

    thanks

Book time for an engine replacement is 14.0 hours. So, that works out to $1400 (on the low end) - $2500 (upper end) for labor alone. If you can find someone to do a passable job for $750, I would have sent it there yesterday.

just an update for my situation.

It was my head gasket that was the issue, I found a local guy in Sacramento who changed the head gasket for $950 comes with a 1 year warranty. ( he said he changed only the head gasket because most of the other gaskets were in decent condition.)
Since getting it replaced its been 2000+ miles and the car runs good. Though sometimes I hear light taps from the engine area I try to ignore them lol.
been around 1 month since I got it done. I will try and let you all know if it goes bad sooner than 1 year :)
overall spent $950 for head gasket and labor, $60 for an egr tank replacement, $10 for gas : $1020

    my other option was :
local shops in sacramento charged $700-$800 labor for an engine swap, the engine would cost $1300 for a 2014 prius from benzeen auto parts with 80k miles and a 1 year warranty on it. total would be around $2k

Glad it is sorted and keep us posted on the long term;).

    Some questions:
    • Which mechanic did you use?
    • Did you check with HP motors that is just up the street from Benzeen in Rancho Cordova?
    • Did your egr circuit get cleaned?
    • Install an oil catch can?
Good luck and keep us posted (y).

Over a year later... any update if the headgasket change itself still has the problem fixed?

I have been doing extensive research and based off everything I can find, it appears that it tends to be a clogged EGR System that is the root cause of the eventual head gasket issue. And in 2010 and 2011 models, the clogged EGR system is amplified due to a poorly design intake manifold design which has since been revised with a TSB.

If I could go back in time 100k miles, I would install a oil catch can and clean my EGR cooler periodically.

The revised designed didn't resolve let alone alleviate the clogging so OCC is the way to slow it down.

I have been having the same issues as everyone else concerning my Prius. I also live in Sacramento. I am limited on funds. I'd like to know what shop @dave21ish went to for his head gasket replacement? Is there any one in this town reliable enough to diagnose this issue and not try and price gouge at the same time. I'm leaning towards just replacing the whole engine. If anyone has some sound advice I'd greatly appreciate it. I may engine oil isn't milky. But I have had some noticeable change in the levels over time. Also my coolant levels seem to drop and need refilling. I took it to aamco around the beginning of December. They wanted me to just keep throwing money at parts. From the egr valve, tune up, etc. The diagnostic fees were attached each time they wanted to turn to something new. Is their a reliable hybrid mechanic out in this area that can help. Where did that other member go to in order to get his quote for swap to be done for that $750 price. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I honestly don't know what to do. I don't know if I need more work done than just a head gasket replacement. When I step down in the gas for too long the check engine light starts to blink. Aamco daid that this mean the load is too heavy. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Try a leak-down test, that should confirm or not if it's head gasket. Sounds like it is with coolant dropping.

    How many miles on it?

You need to stay on top of EGR and intake manifold cleaning. The latter has small EGR passages that you need to clear:
