Is this a SOFTEX wheel? If so, it's in good condition. It honestly doesn't feel like real leather, but I'm not sure.

    That's it, Mate! ;)

    Fake, imitation, artificial leather.

Great - the REAL ... Fake, imitation, artificial leather.

I've had cars with leather seats - which I promptly put seat covers on.

But the 2 with genuine leather steering wheels (FORD) were really nice - and I wouldn't cover.

@Starship16 I want that one just because!

Looks an awful lot like it, seems yours is shinier? Maybe more wear on the material?

Hopefully at best it is only affecting some steering wheels and not others...only time will tell. I'm one of those people who drive with one hand at 12 o'clock lol like I'm driving a hot rod or something...

My peeling occurred at the 12:00 position, even though I am a ten and two guy...

Mine has only done about 35,000km. I also put on a cover every time I'm parked during the day. After having a Mazda wheel de-laminate 1996 (warranty replacement) they suggested a cover is a good idea.

Following up: the dealer is ordering a new steering wheel under warranty. (And they put the tape on the wiring harness.)

Noticed the same thing on mine. It started at 16,600 miles, 16 months after purchase. It has slowly developed from one little crease to all these now. The area affected has grown to about 1.5-2”. I came last week but they said they couldn’t check anything because it was around 3:30pm and told me to come back on a day where I could come in the morning. I finally got a chance to bring it in to Toyota this morning on my day off for the recall notice and to have them check out the steering wheel. I was told the shop foreman and the service director would have to send pictures and see what Toyota Corp. says about it, and if they say no, then there’s nothing they can do. Hopefully they do the right thing and replace it. This is definitely not normal wear and tear and I’m very disappointed seeing this is not a one off thing and that many others have had the same issue. I just got the car last summer.

Actually I upgraded last summer to a 2017 Prius 3 Touring. Just realized I hadn't updated my profile.

Also, an update: The shop foreman wrote on the notes that it was caused by lotion or grease. I asked to speak with him about the issue because theres nothing affecting the surface of the material, its simply the fact that it is coming undone from underneath the material and bunching up. I was worried that comment would cause toyota to deny the warranty claim. I never got a chance to speak to him, but after waiting around for several hours, they offered to replace it under "goodwill assistance" and have the part on order. I just need to wait for the call that its arrived so i can schedule an appointment to get the work done. Im pretty anxious about that and will be happy once its officially replaced within the next week or two.

This was my experience also. A goodwill replacement by the dealer without Toyota taking any blame for the issue. I guess that they don't want a paper trail that could apply to others...

I wonder if it was something on the mechanic's hand when I took my car in for a recall.

When the car was done, I saw him and the service writer kind of arguing, and the mechanic was all flustered and pointing at the steering wheel. I questioned the service writer about what they were talking about, and he clammed up! Refused to tell me. Then he finally pointed out the bubble, but claimed no responsibility.

And of course I can't prove any of that happened. And nobody would believe it. I guess we all need to start wearing body-cams. I swear it had no bubble when I left the house that morning.

Our 2017 lease Prius Prime’s steering wheel started bubbling at the 12:00 position a couple months ago. It’s leased and I just brought it in for its last free service at 25k miles. I mentioned the steering wheel which is now actively peeling. They said they’ve never seen this. Must be because of lotion or solvents they said. Neither of which I use. They’re going to take a look. If they say this obvious defect is not covered by warranty, I’ll complain to higher levels.

Seems like a recurring problem with their Softex product.

Dealer replaced free of charge on October 2017 and again at December 2018, this time Toyota sent a reimbursement check to cover replacement from the dealer. Local dealer told me to call Toyota Customer experience Center they may do something. Problem is it only lasts a little over a year.....

Just got a 2016 with 30,000 miles, taking it to Toyota today to see if the 36,000 mile warranty will cover it. Looks like its a defect knowing many other people have the same issue.
